Maria Strus , Maria Malanch u k , Alexandra Kalus zy k , Luba Ly s , Luba Mo y s a enko . Branch 8 was organized in 1986. The group currently has 14 members. We have taken the initia- tive to restore and maintain the bronze Lesya Ukrainka statue at the Ukrainian Cultural Garden at Rocke- feller Park in Cleveland, Ohio. The statue was originally commissioned in 1961 by UNWLA Regional Council of Ohio. After 50 years of Cleveland weather, the sculpture badly needed restoration. On May 7, 2011, a banq uet - benefit was held in the honor of Lesya Ukrainka . Over 300 people at- tended and enjoyed t he program which included Metropolitan Opera bass St ef an S z kafaro w sk y from N ew Y ork C ity and fam ed Ukrainian bandurist Julian K y tast y. The event was a success, and the re - bronzing of the Lesya statue took place in June of 2011. Every year in August , the Cultural Garden Federation celebrates One World Day. On August 28, 2011, Branch 8 held the 50 th Anniversary Rededication Ceremony at the Garden. We had the honor of having Marianna Za j a c , UNWLA P resident, drive in from N ew Y ork to attend our ceremony. The pro- gram started with blessings from Bishop Bura, speeches, r ecital of Lesya poems, songs from the vocal ensemble “Zoria,” and dance by the group “Kashtan . ” On August 25, 2013, U nited Ukrainian O rganiza- tions of Ohio celebrated Ukra i nian Independence Day with a short program at the Garden. Branch 8 set up tables and sold pastries as well as other miscellaneous items in all three years. Maintenance and landscaping is ong oing in the Garden , which also includes the busts of Ivan Franko, Volodymyr the Great, and Taras Shevchenko. We would like to thank student volunteers from C ase W estern R eserve U niversity and volu nteers through an exchange work - permit program with Ukrai ne and the State of Ohio who donated their time and energy to clean up the Garden throughout the years. In the past three years we have held special collecti ons at churches and participated in church ba- zaars and festivals. In November of 2012 , we hosted our first annual “Evening of Holiday Cheer” Happy Hour fundraiser at Olesia's Place . In December of 2013, we hosted our seco nd a nnual “Evening of Holi- day Cheer” event at the Peppermill Restaurant. All funds raised were used for Lesya’s upkeep. Branch 8 suppo rted Regional Council of Ohio events and donated to the Endowment Fund for the Women’s Studies Lectureship at the Ukrainian Catholic University in L ’ viv.
