150 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА OLESIA WALLO ENGLISH - LANGUAGE EDITOR OF OUR LIFE Our Life Since September of 2011, when I first began working as English - language editor of Our Life , until April 2014, I have been involved in the plan- ning and preparation of exactly 30 issues of the magazine. The work on Our Life , which includes everything from se eking out potential authors to editing received submissions to weighing in on the cover design, is never boring because no two issues are ever the same. Over the past three years I have derived much joy from bei ng part of our small yet dedicated editorial team whose goal is to create Our Life — from the first inklings of an idea to the fin- ished product which you find in your mailbox. It has been wonderful to work with Editor - in - Chief Lidia Slysh, whose energy and great sense of responsibility for the maga zine are contagious. Together with her, we have implemented a few changes in the magazine, including new ongoing columns which appear in either Ukrainian or English (for example, “The Story behind One Photograph” and “Our Creative Readers”). In February of 2012 , a major organiza- tional change took place: we moved all the correspondence associated with Our Life to a new, single email address ( unwlaourlife@gmail.com ), which has made our work more efficient and has further en- hanced our collaboration. In the past three years, the English - language pages of Our Life usually accounted for about a third of the content in each issue (anywhere from 8 to 14 pages) and offered readers a great variety of articles, ref lecting the activities of the UNWLA and the Ukrainian diaspora in North America, as well as contem- porary life in Ukraine. Materials on history, women’s issues, art, literature, cinema, theater, education, health, sports, preservation of our culture, and ma ny other topics were written by our regular contributors, by new authors, and occasionally by editors themselves. I would like to thank the most active and dedi- cated among our contributors on whose English - language submissions to many an issue (and sometim es every issue!) I could count without fail. They are first and foremost members of Our Life ’s editorial board — UNWLA President Marianna Zajac, Yara Arts Group Director Virlana Tkacz, and Petrusia Saw- chak of the Philadelphia Regional Council, who joined our editorial board in the spring of 2013. Many interesting pieces were also contributed by Ulana Zinych, Orysia Zinycz, Lidia Bilous, Olia Rudyk, and Dr. Irene Sawchyn, who has been sharing practical advice on matters of education with OL readers. Final- ly, a very special thank - you must go to Dr. Ihor Magun whose very infor mative health column appeared in every single issue of Our Life which I edited — and in many that had come before! As the list of primar- ily English readers of Our Life continues to grow, we would like to invite our current and prospective contributors to submit more articles in the English language. Since October of 2011, almost every issue of Our Life included one of my pieces. Although writ- ing is never easy, I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to address a variety of topics in shorter and less technical articles which, as an academic, I almost never get to write otherwise. As readers of Our Life may have noticed, my favorite genre thus far has been the interview. Be it a conversation with a young actress of Ukrainian descent (Yana Kesala, December 2011), or with a scholar of women’s history (Dr. Oksana Kis’, March 2012), or with the Director of the International Institute of Education, Culture, and Liaisons with the Diaspora in L’viv (Iryna Klyuchkovska, February 2013), or with the architect of the Holodomor Memorial in Washington, D.C. (Larysa Kurylas, December 2013), I learned much from my interlocutors and attempted to communicate to OL readers some of that passion and commitment which each of these women radiated. Among other articles, in 2011 - 2014 I have also written pieces on Ukraini- an holiday traditions, on Ukraine’s women writers, which happens to be my field of research, and, mos t recently, on Euro m aidan protests in Ukraine. In these past few months, more than ever before, I have come to appreciate the importance of Our Life , which is meant to give voice to our concerns and can be used as an effective tool to mobilize sup- port. As our homeland continues to experience some of the greatest challenges since its independence,
