144 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА ROXOLANA YARYMOVYCH MEMBERS - AT - LARGE CHAIRPERSON From the time I took over the Chairmanship of Members - at - Large six years ago, my plan first and foremost has been to make sure that all of the UNWLA members would understand who UNWLA Mem- bers - at - Large are. As our President Marianna Zajac said , “members are members”; thus there is no differ- ence whether they are Branch members or Members - at - Large (MALs), and we should not marginalize them. In essence, it is a Branch of about 200 members scattered all over North America. The number of MALs is dep endent on applications of new MALs, transfers from and to Branches, and age - related attri- tion. As a group, they do not have meetings, but as individuals, they have an untapped wealth of knowledge, special talents, and resources for our entire organization. As examples of closer integration of MALs into activities of the UNWLA, one could mention the fact that several MALs serve on the National Board; some MALs with artistic talent have contributed their art for Our Life covers; and others contrib- ute articles or reviews in their field of expertise, be it medicine, art, or literature. They share their skills and knowledge with the whole organization. As in previous years, my objective for the last three year s has been to recruit, involve, and retain as many MALs as possible. Our organization has seen a serious attrition of membership in the last three years, and I tried to attract members from defunct Branches by inviting them to transfer to be MALs. This pro cess involves cooperation and transparency between Branches, Regional Councils, and the Liai- son for Branches - at - Large. I have had positive cooperation from the Regional Councils, Liaison for Branches - at - Large, and Branches, as well as excellent communicati on with the 2nd Vice President for Membership, Anna Macielinski, to keep most of such members from leaving the UNWLA. I recognized the importance of recruiting younger generation members, and I have asked young professional Soyuzianka Renata Zajac, membe r of the National Board Auditing Committee, to help me with this task. She has done an outstanding job. She sent out questionnaires to UNWLA young women achievers and her friends with pertinent questions to better understand the younger generation’s intere sts. She also made a presentation to the National Board on the subject of an “Internet Branch,” an initiative that is still ongoing. I believe in the importance of institutional memory, and I felt the need and importance of simpli- fying certain tasks for w hich each National Board member was responsible. In my annual reports, I pro- posed to the National Board to write a Policies and Procedures Manual and to update job descriptions for National and Branch board positions. UNWLA Membership Vice President Anna M acielinski created and ran committees for these tasks, and I was a member and contributor in both. Both tasks were accom- plished and approved. I completed my job description that has been approved by the National Board. I attended all three National Board a nnual m eetings in New York to learn more about different plans and projects of the UNWLA. After each meeting, I prepared and sent a letter to MALs with some of the more important information discussed or announced at the meeting. In my annual Christmas let ter to MALs, I encouraged them to get involved in and contribute to many of our projects, such as the Scholarship Program, the Ukrainian Museum, financial aid to the UCU, Our Life , etc., and they have responded generously. Olya Stasiuk, our office administ rator, includes my letter and sends it to all the MALs with the dues statement for the next year. I also wrote many letters, made many phone calls, and sent many e - mails to MALs regarding their delayed dues payments. From time to time, I receive from our m embers the names of ladies who might be interested in joining the UNWLA. I have written appropriate letters to each one of them inviting them to join. Those who became new members received my letters of welcome and were welcomed also on the pages of Our Li fe . I have also sent letters of welcome to transfers from Branches. They were all counted as new Mem- bers - at - Large. In those letters, I included a copy of the section of the By - laws pertaining to MALs and a brochure on the history of the UNWLA. I also inclu ded an explanation of the workings of the entire UNWLA organization.
