ХХ Х Конвенція СУА 129 tal. His search brought h im t o the UNWLA. The Executive Committee of the UNWLA voted unanimous- ly to support this project and used the Mary Beck Fund for these purposes. I n Ukraine f our thousand people lose their lives in fire s every year and over ten thousand children require tre atment for burn injuries of different gravity. Some of them cannot receive proper care due to the lack of medical equipment at hospitals or due to the high cost of the treatment. Very few of them have an opportunity to receive treatment abroad. Having stud ied the situation in Ukraine, Doctors Collaborat- ing to Help Children developed a comprehensive program to improve the quality of pediatric burn care in L ’ viv. Within this partnership with the L’viv Hospital No. 8, some children are sent for further, more c ompl icated treatment to the Shriner s Hospital. In 2011, the partnership between Dr. Fuzaylov and Dr. Driscoll from Doctors Collaborating to Help Children and the UNWLA all owed to bring the first Shriner s Outreach Clinic in Eastern Europe to L ’ viv. The coll aboration continued and the Outreach Clinic came to L ’ viv in 2012 and 2013 as well. These three visits by Dr . Fuzaylov and Dr . Driscoll along with other medical and nursing personnel helped change the lives of many young patients, since the doctors diag- nosed and planned treatment for three hundred children and carried out several dozen surgeries. The story of Ihor Lakato sh became known not only in Ukraine but also in the United States. The boy suf fered severe burns when he was four years old and did not receive any treatment for it for four years. The child was neglected by his parents , who did not send him to school and did not allow him to leave the house. When Ihor was eight, he was taken from the parents by soci al workers after the neighbors reported the abuse. His parents lost custody of their son and Ihor was placed in an orphanage. The child was u nable to walk, with his left arm grown to his body, and he could hardly talk. His exhausted body weighed only 35 lbs. This was his condition when he arriv ed at the Shriners Hospital in Boston i n August of 2012. After dozens of surgeries, the boy partially returned to normal life . Through the entire ordeal, he remained a warmhearted and kind child. The money that we collected for this little patient covered his rehabilitation treatment and paid for his stay in Boston after the surgeries . Within this partnership, the UNWLA bought modern equipment and medical supplies for the burn unit of Hospital No. 8 in L’viv. Our next step was to fund the opening of the Le arning Center in the hospital, properly equipped to hold long - distance lectures and consultations with the American colleagues. This pro- gram is designed primarily for the medical personnel of the pediatric unit headed by Dr. Savchyn and aims to advance the ir knowledge in new burn care techniques. Five to seven 2.5 - hour lectures per month are held followed by 30 - minute Q&A sessions. This Learning Center makes a valuable addition to the cooperation between the hospitals in L’viv and Boston, and we are proud t o have enabled this project. The UNWLA Social Welfare Committee tries to become more involved with the welfare of our senior members who may be in need of support. Our branches pay attention to the needs of the seniors in their communities and in particula r, of their senior members. Where possible, they organize lectures invit- ing medical doctors or social welfare provision experts to talk about the issues of relevance to older peo- ple. Information support and assistance with paperwork are sometimes more impo rtant than financial as- sistance for people in our communities in the United States. We can all take as an example the work of the Regional Council of Philadelphia which arrange s Easter baskets and Christmas su pper for their senior members during the holida y seasons . Introduced by their former president Chrystyna Izak some years ago, this tradition continues . The work of the UNWLA Social Welfare Committee does not end here. We are always looking for new ways to help and assist Ukrainians around the world, r especting the nearly 90 - year commitment of the UNWLA to this work. This brief account of our achievements since the last Convention would not be complete without my recognition of the support that the Social Welfare Committee received from UNWLA President Marian- na Zajac, who coordinated and assisted in all of our projects; Roma Shuhan, who skillfully managed the financial matters and was always helpful with her advice; Lidia Slysh, editor - in - chief of Our Life , who as- sisted with publishing the names of our d onors; Olha Stasiuk, who deposited checks from our sponsors to UNWLA accounts and submitted their names to Our Life . Presidents of Regional Councils and Branches as well as their Social Welfare Committee Chairs deserve a heartfelt thank - you for their coope ration. Our work, however, would not be possible without our generous UNWLA members, whose commitment and support as well as love and trust in Ukraine and its people deserve deep gratitude and will not be forgotten!
