Ulana Kobzar, Culture Committee chair, worked very closely with the Ukrainian Museum in New York. Olga Trytyak, archivist, has spent many hours of the last nine years sorting through and organizing all of the important papers that reflect our history. Most of these materials have now been sent to the University of Minnesota Archive Center. Dr. Oksana Xenos, one of our Young Women Achievers at a previous convention, now serves as UNWLA parliamentarian. During this term in office, she was able to appropriate the right for federal workers and military personnel to donate to the UNWLA as salary deductions through the CFC. Their contributions have helped the UNWLA in many ways. Hanya Krill, Webmaster, has been instrumental in ensuring that Our Life magazine can be found in its entirety on our Web site. The Worldwide Holodomor Committee has even been linked to our site. Dr. Ivanna Ratych, chair of the UNWLA Auditing Committee, has always been available over the last nine years to provide advice and help resolve complicated situations. This is also the second time that she is chairing the committee responsible for selecting Young Women Achievers from our communities. In addition, Dr. Ratych’s charitable donations have helped us through many trying times. Natalia Duma, office administrator, takes care of the everyday operations of UNWLA headquarters and manages matters related to Our Life magazine. She has graciously handled all office complaints and needs, from ensuring that the new offices are appropriately supplied to amending donations in correctly listed in Our Life magazine. Once, the UNWLA office had many workers, both full and part time. Now, we have Mrs. Duma, who has become an institution. The elected officers come and go, but she stays on. B e q u e st s The UNWLA has received the following bequests: • The Chodnovsky family has pledged $1,000 to the UNWLA on the condition that we deliver a $10,000 donation to a clinic in Lviv, Ukraine. • A bequest from Marusia Beck for the UNWLA and Soyuz Ukranok of Ukraine was received in the sum of $5,000 for each organization. We transferred the money to SUU. • Marusia Beck bequest in the amount of $ 225,702.75 for the Chomobyl fund. Since the amount of the bequest is substantial, we have decided to fund a mobile hospital to be utilized by a hospital facility near Chomobyl, a project we are coordinating with the Ukraine 3,000 Fund administered by the First Lady of Ukraine Kateryna Yushchenko and with our medical adviser Dr. Zenia Chemyk. The Ukrainian Museum in New York was founded by the UNWLA in 1976 with the collection of artifacts that were purchased by the UNWLA for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933 and additional artifacts that were acquired through the years. The UNWLA presented the museum as a gift to the Ukrainian community. The organization retains 51 percent control of the votes, and every UNWLA president is the ex officio first vice president of the museum. The UNWLA members who serve on the Board of Directors are selected by the UNWLA Executive Committee, and their names are given to the Nominating Committee of the museum. The annual board meetings of the museum are held in June; during my presidency, the museum board has elected Olha Hnateyko as museum president every year. The UNWLA is very proud of Olha for the work she has done. During her administration, the new museum facility was built and opened its door to the public. More recently, the museum had a special exhibit, featuring the artifacts that were purchased by the UNWLA, for the Worlds Fair in Chicago in 1933, the articles that were part of the museum’s first permanent collection many decades ago. The National Board and the Regional Councils were sponsors of the exhibit, which should be a source of great pride to all of us. XXVIII Конвенція СУА 97 Natalia Duma www.unwla.org
