also responsible for the preparation and gifting of the Lesia and Petro Kovaliv Award. Marianna Zajac, 4th vice president in charge of communications, functioned as the conduit of informa tion between the Executive Committee and UNWLA members. She was instrumental in organizing the letter writing campaign aimed at saving the Kyrylivsky Sobor and translated the Short History of the UNWLA brochure into English. Maria Tomorug, correspondence secretary, not only performed her duties, but took on many additional projects, especially regarding the convention. She is a member of the convention publication committee, working on English translations. Lidia Babiuk, minutes secretary, has documented the meetings of the Executive Committee and National Board in great detail. She has also contributed various articles regarding meetings or other events to the press. Renata Zajac, treasurer, accomplished a great feat, namely eliminating the need for a “paycheck agency.” She took upon herself the responsibility of managing the tax forms for all employees, thereby saving the organization a great deal of expense. Roma Shuhan, financial secretary, did a wonderful job handling the financial issues, preparing the forms for the yearly dues submitted from the Branches to UNWLA headquarters. Ms. Shuhan also worked on trying to dispose of the Putnam County property, which was willed to the UNWLA by the Lis family under the presidency of Anna Krawczuk. Irena Steckiw and Vera Kushnir, members at large on the Executive Committee, helped as needed. Ms. Kushnir also supplied us with a microphone, which is in constant use. I would like to thank them for being with us. Irene Chaban, editor of Our Life magazine, vigilantly searched for authors in Ukraine to contribute interesting articles to the magazine and prepared the monthly issues for publication. Tamara Stadnychenko, editor of the English-language section of Our Life magazine, encouraged younger members of the UNWLA to contribute interesting articles and continued working with estab lished authors who frequently send articles. She also provided her editorial skills to English translations of all correspondence, reports for the convention book, and the English-language version of the UNWLA brochure. Daria Drozdovsky, Social Welfare Committee chair, was responsible for a function that is very time consuming and involves a lot of planning. Ms. Drozdovsky and I met with Nastia Vivchar, a young girl from Dnipropetrovsk, who came here for a complicated surgery in San Francisco. When she was flying in from Ukraine to New York, Hanya Krill and I met her at the airport. Before returning to Ukraine, she spent some time in New York and we had the opportunity to meet with her again. The UNWLA’s assistance for helping this little girl and others in Ukraine is directed through Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, and we are regularly apprised of how the money is distributed and whether it goes where it is needed most. During this term in office, your president has worked with the social welfare chair to coordinate all help to Ukraine. Christine Shwed, Education Committee chair, was responsible for running the UNWLA preschools. Her major accomplishment has been her work (with UNWLA member-at-large Vera Bej) on an educational text about the Holodomor, which has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for distribution to all school district superintendents for review. Several superintendents have expressed their interest in incorporating this work into their social studies curriculum and educators from other states have also expressed their interest. Maria Polanskyj, Scholarship Program chair, has worked for a very worthwhile cause—the education of young people. The February 2008 issue of Our Life magazine was dedicated to the program’s 40th anniversary. 96 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
