UNWLA and C om m unity P rojects At my request, the Honorable Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City proclaimed September 1 through 11, 2005, Ukrainian-American Heritage Days. I accepted the proclamation from the mayor on behalf of the Ukrainian community. This proclamation was read at every Ukrainian event over the 10 day period. The UNWLA also received a proclamation from the Honorable Marty Markovitz, President of the Borough of Brooklyn. During the ceremony, a Ukrainian flag flew over Brooklyn’s City Hall for the first time. The celebration ended on September 11 with a concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of Our Life magazine, the longest continuously running Ukrainian women’s publication in the United States. A video was produced by Lubomyr Kulynych for this occasion, featuring the editors of the magazine, Ulana Starosolska Lubowych (retired), Irena Chaban (current editor), and Olha Hnateyko (interim editor), discussing this publication. The event also included a memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, and the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana. By agreement of the Ambassador from Ukraine in Washington, D.C., the Ukrainian Consulate in New York, and the Executive Committee of the UNWLA, the sum of $5,000 was given to Mrs. Olya Ovchar (Vivchar) for the needs of the little heroine, Nastia Ovchar (Vivchar). An accompanying letter detailed the collection of the money and how the UNWLA would further contribute to cover Nastia’s expenses. The UNWLA joined a coalition of about 250 organizations and institutions formed by two former ambassadors from the United States to Ukraine, C. Pfeifer and P. Mueller, to lead the drive for the demise of the Jackson Vanik Amendment. This amendment, left over from the days of the USSR, limited U.S. trade with Ukraine. I am very proud to say that the UNWLA had a very active role in this coalition, contributing to the repeal of the amendment by an act of Congress on March 8, 2006. The official signing of the bill by President George Bush occurred on March 23, 2007, at the White House, where I, along with several other UNWLA members, had the privilege of witnessing this historic event. In memory of the 40th anniversary of the “Action Visla,” I asked UNWLA members to take part in community commemora tions, as well as to invite witnesses of this atrocity to relate their experiences during UNWLA meetings. The UNWLA sponsored Dr. A. Bryttan’s work on trans lating into Ukrainian and conducting two Italian operas at the Dnipropetrovsk Opera House, where greetings were read from the president of the UNWLA and Sofia Hewryk. Dr. Bryttan was also presented with the Lesia and Petro Kovaliv Award for his work. Based on a proposal from Dr. Larysa Pevna, the UNWLA initiated a letter-writing campaign targeting various Ukrainian and international organizations, like UNESCO, to save the “Kyrylivskyj Sobor” in Kiyiv, which the Russian Patriarchate wanted to demolish. This action is deemed somewhat successful because the international community is taking this matter under consideration. Your president was one of five co-chairs of the banquet committee for Ukraine’s President Victor Yushchenko and First Lady Kateryna Yushchenko. Five presidents of Ukrainian American organizations signed an agreement with the hotel where the banquet was to be held, stipulating their willingness to cover any deficit. Fortunately, the event was very successful and profitable. At a meeting held at the Ukrainian Embassy, everyone agreed that the proceeds should be used for some noble purpose in Ukraine. My suggestion was that the UNWLA would sponsor a student in the eastern part of Ukraine to pursue Ph.D. studies in a Ukrainian discipline. Since those participating at this meeting could not agree on 94 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
