IRYNA KUROWYCKYJ PRESIDENT OF THE UKRAINIAN NATIONALWOMEN’ S LEAGUE of AMERICA Ending my third term as president of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA), I wish to sincerely thank the members for their vote of confidence in my abilities, as evidenced by their choosing me to lead this organization for three terms of office. These years have been the greatest time of my life, offering many challenges and opportunities within and beyond the scope of our diaspora community. One of those opportunities was being elected president of the National Council of Women/USA, the oldest American women’s coalition of organizations founded in 1888 by the famous American suffragette, Susan B. Anthony. During my presidency the organization consisted of 35 organizations with 17 million constituents. But while it was a great honor to serve as NCW/USA president, it was an even greater honor and a great joy to serve as president of the UNWLA, which is very dear to my heart because it is a Ukrainian organization as well as an organization strongly supported by my mother. As president, I faced many challenges, many complicated issues, and many obstacles. One great challenge was moving UNWLA headquarters from the Self Reliance Federal Credit Union building to the building we currently occupy, in space previously occupied by the Ukrainian Museum. It was a huge undertaking, in part, because most of the important documents of our organization were stored in New Jersey at the time while others were in New York, a situation that sometimes made it difficult to find what was needed quickly and efficiently. Natalia Duma, office administrator. Iryna Kurowyckyj, president of the UNWLA, in part of the 4th floor room previously occupied by the Ukrainian Museum and now used as temporary UNWLA headquarters. R e l o c a t io n a n d R e n o v a t io n After the Ukrainian Museum relocated to its long awaited, new facility, I took on the respon sibility of remodeling two floors of the building that we were to occupy. This building is under joint ownership—40 percent belonging to the UNWLA and 60 percent belonging to the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. The portion of the building we moved into was in sad shape, requiring remodeling and renovations that were essential, both for safety and for functionality. I would like to thank my husband, Jaroslaw Kurowyckyj for his help in this endeavor, especially for his ability and willingness to deal with numerous contractors and inspectors and ensuring that all the work was in compliance with the current building codes of New York City. 90 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
