Easter Baskets, a spring zoo field trip, a Mother’s Day concert, and Moving-Up/Graduation ceremonies. Branch 120 donated $1,000 to the UNWLA Orphans Fund in 2006. 2007 Irene Grassman, Branch 120 president for most of the last 12 years, ended her tenure in April. Vice President Zinnia Dzus-DeBole was elected president, also serving as branch secretary through the end of the year. Five branch meetings, as well as the annual meeting in March, were held during the year. Continuing its annual tradition, Branch 120 held its bake sales and raffles for both Christmas and Easter holidays, baking rohalyky filled with prunes, apricots, or poppy seeds, as well as medivnyky. Branch member Luba Dinger has created and assembled beautiful raffle baskets for several years, artfully arranging goodies donated by other members. At this year’s International Festival at Nazareth College Branch 120 was represented by Dusia Hanushevsky, who displayed her Trypillian and Hutsul ceramic creations, and by Dr. Christine Hoshowsky’s, who exhibited an extensive embroidery collection created by her late mother. Both ladies demonstrated the craftsmanship that goes into creating these artworks. The branch took part in the Rochester Celebration of Women in Living History, honoring artist Mrs. Irena Twerdochlib, who had taught the members the art of “vebyjka” (block printing) during the early years the branch was in existence. As town liaison, member, and Irondequoit Councilwoman Lydia Dzus, has welcomed several hundred guests from Ukraine to Rochester over the years. This year, Councilwoman Dzus, always in Ukrainian costume, greeted the Ambassador of Ukraine, Aleksandr Shamshur with a traditional bread and salt and welcoming address. In early September, branch members Zinnia Dzus- DeBole, Lydia Dzus, Nickole Riedl, and Laryssa Cholach entertained several mayors from Ukraine as well as their UNWLA sister in the New York-North region by singing for them at a banquet and during a visit to the City of Rochester community. President Zinnia Dzus-Debole emceed the event. To commemorate the day’s event, the branch godmothers, Irena Russnak and Nadya Tratch, as well as each branch member received a single rose. The branch founders—Lydia Dzus, Zinnia Dzus-DeBole, Daria Hanushevsky, and Dr. Christine Hoshowsky—each received a silver, ribbon-embellished rose. Branch members honored former president Irene Grassman, with a Hramota/Certificate of Appreciation for being the longest serving president of the branch. As an added surprise, Irondequoit Councilwoman Lydia Dzus presented the branch with a proclamation, saluting Branch 120 members on their 25 years of serving the Ukrainian and American community. An exhibit including kyptari, ceramics, vebyjka, hand-made Christmas ornaments, and numerous Ukrainian published recipes was set up and labeled “Our Work, Our Accomplishments.” Photos and articles of community events, in which members, proud to share their heritage, had taken part in both the Ukrainian and American community, were also displayed. Marika Riedl, Svitlychka’s administrator, assembled photos of Svitlychka students doing projects and learning. In November, Oles Kowalchuk, an eighth grade student showed his PowerPoint presentation of a History of Ukrainian buildings in Rochester at the monthly social gathering/meeting. Members discussed UNWLA magazine articles at monthly gatherings. After graduating seven children in May, the Svitlychka enrollment for 2007 was thirteen 13 children. Svitlychka events for the year included two field trips: the first to a Pumpkin Farm in the fall and the second to the Seneca Park Zoo in the spring. The children also participated in a Sviatiy Mykolai concert, preparation of Easter baskets, and Mother’s Day and Graduation ceremonies. Teachers Nickole Riedl and Laryssa Cholach, both professional educators, have taught the Svitlychka students the last five years. They instill in their students love for their Ukrainian culture, teaching them songs, poems, and crafts. Branch 120 donated $500 to the UNWLA Babusi Fund in 2007.
