UNWLA BRANCH 120 - ROCHESTER, NY NORTHERN NEW YORK STATE REGIONAL COUNCIL From left to right: The Honorary Councilwoman Lydia Dzus, Luba Dinger, Zinnia Dzus-DeBole (President), Irene Grassman, Dr. Christine Hushowsky, Marika Riedl, Halyna Snihur, Dusia Hanushevsky 2005 During 2005, Branch 120 members had 5 meetings/social gatherings, as well as the Annual Meeting held in January. Branch members participated in the New York-North Regional Council meetings and yearly conference. President Irene Grassman represented the Branch at the triennial convention—the 80th anniversary of the UNWLA. In March, members gathered to share their family Easter traditions, and each brought a favorite Easter recipe. The branch hosted a “chayok” (tea) for the community, both in May and June, which featured presentations by two Orange Revolution election overseers. Tanya Farmiga-Kosc shared a picture-filled PowerPoint presentation with discussion, and in May, Chrystyna Siolkowsky shared her personal experience in a discussion in June. The branch held its annual bake sales and raffles at Easter and Christmas, making several hundred rohalyky at their group toloka the evening prior to each event, and exchanged gifts during the Christmas season. Five events were held for the 20 children enrolled in the Rochester Svitlychka, which is under the direction of Branch 120: an autumn field trip to a local pumpkin farm, Sviatoho Mykolaya concert, preparation of Easter Baskets, a spring field trip to a Park Zoo, and Mother’s Day and Moving-Up/Graduation concert and ceremonies. The Branch donated $100 to the rebuilding of the UNWLA offices and $500 for the UNWLA Scholarship Fund, through the Svitlychka. 2006 During 2006, President Irene Grassman held four 4 meetings for the membership, as well as one Uprava meeting. The branch held its annual meeting in February 2006, and branch members attended the New York-North Regional Council meetings. Several members demonstrated shared their talents and crafts with both the Ukrainian and American Rochester community. At an International Festival, held in April, at Nazareth College, Irene Grassman demonstrated Trypillian and Hutsul ceramics. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle newspaper reported on this cultural event and published a story about Branch 120 member Nichole Riedl playing the Ukrainian instrument, the bandura. The branch held its annual Christmas and Easter bake sales and raffles, with branch members baking medivnyky in addition to their traditional rohalyky. They also assembled a display about Christmas traditions and embroidered rushnyky at the Ukrainian FCU. The Svitlychka graduated 10 children in May. In September, fourteen children were enrolled for the new school year. The Svitlychka had five events: a fall field trip to Cobble Creek Pumpkin Farm, a Sviatoho Mykolaya concert and visit by Sviatiy Mykolai, preparation of Ukrainian 322 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
