The first event planned for the year was a screening of the film Between Hitler and Stalin: Ukraine in World War II: the untold story on February 4, 2006 at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters. This event was planned to publicize, bring awareness, and commemorate the suffering and death of millions of Ukrainians caught between the two regimes. Professor Emeritus Taras Hunczak, as moderator, offered a post-screening question and answer period. From the screening of Between Hitler and Stalin film. Seated from left: Victoria Mischenko, Prof Taras Hunczak and Anna Krawczuk. Standing from left: M. Orysia Jacus, Maria Polanskyj, Luba Bilowchtchuk, Olha Hunczak, Rita Oberleitner and Irene Krawczuk. On February 9, 2006 on behalf of WFUWO, Branch member and UNWLA, Inc. Honorary President Anna Krawczuk was invited to speak at a workshop “Addressing Global Poverty: What Works for Families.” This event was sponsored by the NGO Committee on the Family at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Her presentation “Enhancing and Creating Opportunities Through Education and Scholarships” emphasized the UNWLA’s Scholarship Program’s goals and accomplishments. It was later published in an issue of Our Life as well as highlighted in an article in The Ukrainian Weekly on March 26, 2006. In this same issue another member, Irene Krawczuk, penned a report on the above-noted February 4, 2006 film screening. The Branch’s fundraising events continued through the summer with a picnic at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Matthew Koziak. On November 14, 2006 the Branch had an encore screening of the film Harvest of Despair at the Old Bridge, NJ Library. It should be noted that after each screening of the two films, UNWLA Branch 98 donated copies to the respective libraries. Gift-wrapping was once again scheduled for December at a local Barnes and Noble bookstore. Our lively Christmas party was hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Jakubowicz. The year began with the Branch’s annual meeting on January 26, 2007. A highlight of the meeting was the report by Branch Scholarship Program Chair, Luba Bilowchtchuk. A total of $18,294.89 was raised and forwarded to the Scholarship Program in 2006. Many of the donations were made in honor of her late husband, Daniel. She reported that UNWLA Branch 98 sponsors were credited with assisting 71 students from 5 countries: Argentina (4), Austria (1), Brazil (7), Ukraine (55), and Uzbekistan (4). For many years Branch 98 has been sponsoring one student in Ukraine who is to graduate this year. A letter of thanks from a University student in Brazil helped to confirm the value of this program. It was decided that the Branch would plan a celebration to honor the 40th anniversary of the UNWLA, Inc. Scholarship/ Children-Student Sponsorship Program at a later date in 2007. 306 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
