UNWLA Branch 98 is a small branch that does not have a Ukrainian-American community in its immediate geographic area but whose main focus is to bring awareness about Ukraine’s documented history to the American public. Branch 98 celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2008. We can proudly state that over these years we have continued to support the goals and objectives of the UNWLA, Inc. that celebrated its own 80th anniversary in 2005. To honor this octogenarian milestone, Branch 98 sponsored a month-long exhibit (January 2005) of Ukrainian Arts and Crafts at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan, New Jersey. We were very grateful to Ms. Flora Higgins, Public Relations Librarian, for having made this exhibit possible. For over a year members busily prepared the exhibit that featured five showcases containing unique and antique embroidered blouses, Kosiv woodcarvings, women’s neckwear (corals, gerdany, etc.), and miniature icons. The exhibit also honored the victims of the 1932-1933 famine through a display of relevant books, newspapers, and the special October 2002 documentary issue of Our Life. A special highlight of the exhibit was a screening of the film Harvest of Despair to the general public. The balance of the year saw members meeting regularly, attending the Convention in May 2005, conducting fundraising events such as the annual summer picnic in June at the home of Mr. & Mrs Jurij Jacus, gift-wrapping at a local Barnes and Noble bookstore, and enjoying a holiday party in December at the home of Mr. & Mrs.Schmotolacha. In January 2006 the Branch conducted its annual meeting and election of officers. Elected for a two-year term were: Victoria Mischenko President, Mary Bonnano Vice-President, Irene Krawczuk Secretary, Orysia Jacus Treasurer, Luba Bilowchtchuk Scholarship, and Oksana Koziak Social Welfare.
