members greatly enjoyed this experience as it provided an opportunity for them to meet UNWLA members from around the United States. In addition, one of our very talented and creative members designed the convention program booklets. Other members participated in the “Reflections of UNWLA Presidents” program during Saturday night’s dinner celebrating the 80th Anniversary of the UNWLA. Even though we are a very small group, we worked very hard to make this convention as successful as possible and this challenge was met with a spirit of cooperation and pride. As we are within commuting distance to New York City, our branch members have, over the past three years, visited the Ukrainian Museum for various exhibits. We also had a mother/daughter outing to participate in classes about Easter traditions and baking classes, etc. Over the past several years, we have hosted a variety of annual fundraisers: We organize bus trips to the casinos in Connecticut and Atlantic City, hold community penny socials, participate at both the Easter and Christmas Bazaars at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, and hold bake sales twice a year. A successful event which we have hosted three years running at Soyuzivka is our “Spa Weekend.” This is a weekend during which we encourage women who work hard year round to kick off their shoes and treat themselves to massages, Tai Chi sessions, hikes in the woods, make-up lessons from professionals, and seminars that range from healthy eating to taking better care of our bodies. Participation in these weekends has continued to grow, and each year looks more encouraging! One of our newest members, Irena Slywkanycz, valiantly adopted a beautiful 8-year-old girl from Ukraine, and Hanna has quickly taken to her new life in the United States. As Irena began sharing stories of the challenges she faced in the adoption process, both in general and as a single mother, she explained just how poor the orphanage was. The women of Branch 95 banded together and gathered clothes and toys for the children of Hanna’s orphanage in the village of Komarivka, Borzna region of the Chemihiv district Ukraine. After all was said and done, twenty four packages were sent! Branch 95 also attempts to take part in local cultural events to educate the local American communities on Ukrainian culture and traditions. The Hudson River Arts Festival is an event which we are invited to attend every year. Over the past three years, we have organized exhibits on the Byzantine icon, Ukrainian embroidery, and, of course, the art of the pysanka. Every year our displays are met with much interest from the public and excitement from the organizers. An added bonus to this festival is that with each year of participation, we’ve met new women of Ukrainian descent and signed up new members! This past spring, in March of 2007, the members organized a pysanka exhibit and demonstra tion at the Poughkeepsie Galleria mall. Three-foot posters of the Ukrainian pysanka beckoned shoppers to our exhibit. Branch 95 has strong ties to Soyuzivka. It is where our members first held their monthly meetings, where we held the “World of the 21st Century Woman Conference” in 2003, where the we host our Spa weekends and various banquets, and where we hold our annual Christmas parties. So, when we were asked to volunteer their time for Soyuzivka’s first “Film and Cultural Festival” in July 2007, our members along with many husbands jumped at the chance to give back. Thank you Soyuzivka for being such an integral park of our branch’s success. During November 2007, the Ukrainian community in New York City began its commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor. Several members participated in the march, which started downtown at St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and headed uptown to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. At St. Patrick’s, a somber service was held in memory of all the people lost during this horrific time in Ukraine’s history. Among those to pass along condolences and share their thoughts was our own U.S. Congressman, Mr., Maurice Hinchey. Mr. Hinchey is of Ukrainian decent and is always willing to participate in UNWLA events. As a matter of fact, he was our guest at the UNWLA Convention kick-off in Albany in 2005. Branch 95 has taken on the assignment to write to local newspapers regarding the Famine using the sample press release sent out by the Executive Board in November 2007. In addition, we are planning to commemorate the Holodomor locally in 2008. 298 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
