“The Youngest in Chicago ” UNWLA BRANCH 85, KATRUSIA ZARYCKA PATRONESS, CHICAGO, IL CHICAGO REGIONAL COUNCIL 2007 Regional Council Elections. Lida Marushka, Natalka Mycyk, Katya Hrynewych, Itya Dziuk, TaliaTaran- Lisowska, Chrystya Taran Although our branch was established over 20 years ago and the median age of our members is late 40s, we are still known throughout the Chicago Regional Council as “The Youngest in Chicago.” This nickname, given to us decades ago, can probably be attributed to the fact that we are young at heart and to the related fact that our primary vision is to nurture and care for the young children in our Svitlychka. Our weekday Svitlychka in Chicago, previously administered by two other branches in suc cession, is the only weekday Svitlychka in our Chicago metropolitan area. Our teachers are dedicated to the children and their parents, and we are proud that we are giving back to our Ukrainian community that which was given to us by our mothers. Ukrainian speaking children three and four years of age learn songs, recite poems, and learn to enjoy the company of other children, a foundation for growth and development. For the past few years, the Svitlychka has operated under the successful administration of Talia Taran-Lisowska and Katya Hrynewych. Our branch has 20 members, and each year we manage to recruit one more. One reason for this is that our involvement with the Ukrainian community in Chicagois strong. Another is that we involve ourselves in community events as representatives of the UNWLA. We are proud of our collaborative endeavors with all of the Regional Council branches in Chicago, and we generously help at all Regional Council activities. Several years ago, Branch 85 took on the responsibility of representing the UNWLA at the annual Christmas program at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. For decades, the museum has highlighted Christmas around the world, featuring Christmas trees designed and decorated by various ethnic groups. Thousands of people view the trees each year. New ornaments, hand made by our members, are supplemented to our traditional tree each year. The coordination of the tree decorating, ornament design, program sponsorship, and entertainment are the work of Committee Chair Christine Charkewych-Dziuk, Irene Demus, and Adrianna Liber. Ukrainian community financial institutions, the Heritage Foundation and Selfreliance, have supported us in this endeavor each year. 286 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
