BRANCHES-AT-LARGE There are currently 11 Branches-at-Large encompassing eight states as detailed in the table below. Branch # Name Date founded 3 Phoenix AZ 1971 14 Atlanta GA 1976 17 Miami FL 1952 27 Pittsburgh PA 1931 38 Denver CO 1978 * 56 North Port FL 1991 78 Washington DC 1963 107 San Jose CA 1971 111 Los Angeles CA 1991 * 118 Houston TX 1971 124 St. Petersburg FL 2001 Total 11 Branches * These branches were founded earlier, stopped functioning, and were reestablished on dates listed in table. BACKGROUND Many branches that are now part of the Branches-at-Large corpus, were established some time ago (refer to the “date founded” column above) and did not belong to any Regional Council. As the number of these independent branches increased, the UNWLA Executive Board, in 1994, decided to create a headquarters position to serve as a liaison between these branches and the Executive Board. In May of 2005, at the UNWLA Convention held in Albany, I was nominated and elected as Liaison for Branches-at-Large for a second term. MY ACTIVITIES As the Liaison of Branches-at-Large, I maintained contact with these branches by phone, correspondence, and e-mail and responded to their various requests/questions. Through informational notes, I communicated to the branches directives and guidelines channeled from UNWLA headquarters. Specifically, I attended the annual board meetings in New York City and presented annual reports reflecting the status of activities of the Branches-at-Large; I also documented the highlights of the annual board meetings and sent these to each of the Branches-at-Large. In addition, I wrote an article about the Branches-at-Large for Our Life (see January 2008 issue), highlighting activities of the Branches-at-Large. Representing the UNWLA, I attended a “Julia Tymoshenko Meeting “with the Ukrainian community in Washington, DC, in the spring of 2007. On December 14, 2007,1 attended a meeting with representatives of Ukrainian-American organizations with the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Oleh Shamshur. One of the key topics discussed at this event was the acquisition of land for the Holodomor monument. ACTIVITIES of BRANCHES-AT-LARGE The Branches-at-Large, in their own regions of the country, support the resolutions of the XXVII Convention related to organizational, cultural, press, social welfare, educational, art, museum, and scholarship matters, and participate in special Headquarters directed actions. Because these branches are generally located far from cities with numerous and long-established Ukrainian institutions, they function XXVIII Конвенція СУА 209 www.unwla.org
