TAMARA STADNYCHENKO ENGLISH-LANGUAGE EDITOR Since becoming English-language editor of Our Life, I have worked very hard to encourage UNWLA members, branches, regional councils, and M committee chairs to submit articles about their activities and events for pub lication. A review of the report I presented at the previous convention shows that there were approximately 20 articles of this kind between 2002 and 2005. Since that time, this number has grown appreciably; in 2007 alone, 18 articles by or about UNWLA members, branches, and regional councils were published. As I write, other articles about UNWLA activities are currently sitting in my “in box” for publication in 2008. This momentum is gratifying and a testament to the power of persistence and persuasion, but the value of these articles lies in something more important than numbers. The articles chronicle the cultural, educational, and philanthropic achievements that define the UNWLA while reflecting the diversity of UNWLA membership. For me, they also represent an interesting personal bonus—the opportunity to communicate with the people who write them. This communication often leads to ideas for new articles and has in many cases initiated a telephone or cyberspace friendship between author and editor, and more importantly, between two soyuzianky. While preparing this report for the convention book, I find myself anticipating meeting (or re-meeting) “my authors” in person in Detroit. Another bonus stemming from this welcome influx of materials is that I find myself in the enviable position of writing articles that I want to write rather than articles I have to write to cover blank spaces on pages that must be filled to meet deadlines. The four articles noted below are among my favorites in this want to write genre. Each of the four articles had its own challenges and rewards; each was an opportunity to learn while doing something I love doing. “Trilogy: Light From the East” (June 2006) captures a moment in time when a theatrical production about a theatrical production became part of a historic event and leapt from the stage to the silver screen. It gave me the opportunity to work with Virlana Tkacz, who was recently named Honored Artist of Ukraine and who has contributed numerous articles to Our Life. “The Story of a Cooking DVD and the People Behind It” (May 2007) was an opportunity to learn from a group of culinary artists who make Sviata Vechera look easy, even for an admittedly dreadful cook. “With Your Shield Or On It” (January 2008), a tribute to the valiant young men who fought and died for their country at Kruty, allowed me to integrate my passion for writing with my passion for history. “Our Life Now, Our Life Then” (September 2007) was inspired by studying Our Life issues edited by one of my predecessors, the late Lydia Burachynska, who published monthly articles about interesting young women enjoying academic, artistic, or professional successes. One of my goals is to resurrect this feature in future issues of Our Life, and this is a goal that I hope UNWLA members will help me achieve. A formal request for articles or information about the talented young women in our communities was published in the October 2007; readers may consider this report as a follow-up invitation. In an effort to diversify the content of Our Life and to promote reader interest, I try to cultivate relationships with authors who enhance the quality of the magazine with interesting columns or features beyond the scope of UNWLA activities. Among these authors is Dr. Ihor Magun, whose monthly column provides concise and practical advice on health issues. Another valued author is Marta Zielyk, who began writing for the magazine on themes related to events in Ukraine and has more recently delighted readers with her whimsical stories about diaries, book clubs, and taking time to smell the roses. There have been several articles on historical or literary themes from Helene Turkewycz-Sanko and several book reviews from Marta Tamawsky, who is a member of Our Life's editorial board and a valued advisor. UNWLA Parliamentarian Oksana Xenos treated us to an article about astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper (December 2006) and UNWLA Vice President Marianna Zajac gave us a sparkling email interview with XXVIII Конвенція СУА 173 www.unwla.org
