MARIA POLANSKYJ, CHAIR UNWLA SCHOLARSHIP/CHILDREN-STUDENT SPONSORED PROGRAM Mission Statement: Enhance and create opportunities through education and preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage within and outside of the United States of America. Victoria Mischenko With this motto and ideology in mind, the UNWLA Scholarship/ Children-Student Sponsorship Program has embarked on the 41st year of its activity. I am extremely grateful to the committee members Anna Krawczuk, Luba Bilowchtchuk, M. Orysia Jacus, and Dr. Daria Nowakiwska Lissy for volunteering 15,200 hours to our cause in the last three years. I especially thank my predecessors Anna Krawczuk and Luba Bilowchtchuk for their continuous dedication and unique support. I am grateful as well to UNWLA Scholarship Program treasurer M. Orysia Jacus, who has been in this volunteer position for more than twenty years, and to Daria Lissy, who travels two hours from Delaware to our office in Matawan and whose professional ties have allowed us to benefit from the Exxon/Mobil Employee Volunteer Fund. Last but not least, my thanks to Victoria Mischenko for being our office administrator for the last 15 years, doing work well beyond her responsibilities. Each member of the UNWLA Scholarship Program Committee has an assigned task. Members alternate their time in the office due to space limitation—we have only three desks. They communicate via email and telephone, thus keeping the work process going. Their combined efforts reduce the administrative costs, which rise each year. In the past three years the UNWLA Scholarship Program has awarded 1,661 scholarships for a total of $321,785. (See financial reports.) Ukraine's recipients numbered 1,355, and we are thankful to Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, especially Alla Debeliuk, head of the Scholarship Committee in Ukraine, for her dedication, support, and cooperation. There are also dedicated people in Brazil, Argentina, and other countries with whom we have worked for many years. Our success depends on their cooperation. But it also depends on the cooperation and hard work of UNWLA Branches, Regional Councils and members who have supported our efforts for more than forty years. Please know that our success is your success! Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the UNWLA Scholarship/Children-Student Sponsorship Program (1967-2007) As stipulated in our program circulars, the year 2007 was dedicated to honoring sponsors, benefactors, and people of good will whose financial support enabled this program to exist for 40 years. UNWLA Branches celebrated the 40th anniversary, sent greetings, and conducted special fundraisers on behalf of the program. It was a great honor for me to celebrate this milestone with UNWLA Branch 56 in North Port, Florida; Branch 89 in Kerhonkson, New York; and Branch 98 of Holmdel/Middletown, New Jersey. During this special year, I also attended an event highlighting the program, which was hosted by the UNWLA’s New England Regional Council. The February 2008 issue of Our Life, dedicated to the 40th Anniversary of the UNWLA Scholar ship Program, gave us an opportunity to share its successful history with readers. This successful history is a triumph for all of those who have contributed to our program’s success—together we helped 3,000, mostly underprivileged, young people to realize their dreams and better their lives. Activities, trips, and meetings The UNWLA Scholarship Program is continuing its activity in South America, especially in Brazil. We work closely with Vera Lozova, Director of the Institute of Catechists of the Sacred Heart of XXVIII Конвенція СУА 159 www.unwla.org
