In November 2007, the workbooks (see cover of the book at left) were sent to every School District Superintendent in Pennsylvania (501 in total). In January 2008, every UNWLA Regional Council also received a copy of the book. The intensive effort of compiling, producing, and distributing the book took up an incredibly long two years and infringed considerably on the Education Committee’s second goal, as presented at the Education Seminar of the XXVII UNWLA Convention in Albany, namely, the creation of new pedagogical materials for our organization’s Svitlychky, founded throughout the United States by many of our branches from the 1950s onward. With respect to this goal, members of the committee visited two Svitlychky (one in New York City, the other in Cleveland, Ohio). The constraints of full-time jobs and the work on the Genocide project made it difficult to visit others. The Svitlychky perform an incredible service within their individual Ukrainian communities throughout the United States. We see this every month in the many write-ups about them in Our Life, and it is quite an incredible feat that our branches have accomplished, some for as long as 50 years or more. During this 50-year time span, pedagogical approaches and materials have undergone many changes. In most states, children 3 years of age are enrolled in K3 and K4 classes for half or full days. Much of the new research supports the need for starting the education of children as early as three years of age. Children with early training learn to read faster and in general achieve higher grades and learn better studying skills as they progress from elementary school to middle school to high school. Furthermore, children exposed to bilingual education and environment fare even better. Our Svitlychky should not only serve to preserve our heritage, but prepare our children for school, giving them all the skills they will need to achieve success in both the everyday schools as well as the Ukrainian Heritage Saturday schools. Knowing this, we have begun to develop a full-fledged one-year pre-school curriculum to assist the teachers in branch-run Svitlychky. I hope to see all of you at the Education Seminar/Workshop at the XXVIII UNWLA Convention, in Troy, Michigan, where we will show you some of the new materials created for this purpose.
