DARIA DROZDOWSKY, CHAIR SOCIAL WELFARE OF UNWLA I was elected as the UNWLA’s Social Welfare Chair at the 27th UNWLA Convention held in May of 2005 in Albany, New York. I began my work by trying to incorporate the resolutions related to Social Welfare adopted at the Convention into my proposed plans. These resolutions were: 1. Continue to support programs for the victims of the Chomobyl disaster, grandmothers, and orphans in Ukraine. 2. Support financially all the new and ongoing Social Welfare programs. 3. Become more aware about the needs and concerns of aging members of our organization. Visit them in the nursing homes, help them with paperwork, and assist them in getting appropriate social services. 4. Support new immigrants from Ukraine and other parts of the world by giving them information that will help them get established. 5. Find ways to get grants for our programs and projects from corporations, agencies, and institutions. 6. Inform the American public at large about UNWLA programs and projects and seek financial support if possible. A Social Welfare Committee was formed, which I chaired, with the following members: Lida Zakrewsky, Maria Sorobey-Shtohryn, Irena Repchuk-D’Alessio, and Iryna Kurowyckyj, ex officio, as president of the UNWLA. During the reporting period, the committee held seven meetings at which we discussed various plans pertaining to UNWLA Social Welfare Programs. I wrote six circulars, which were sent out to all UNWLA branches and Regional Councils. Our committee worked very closely with President Iryna Kurowyckyj, and we are grateful for her input. During the period from May 31, 2005 to December 31, 2007, the UNWLA Social Welfare Committee work closely with 28 Regional Branches of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, who helped us with the coordination of some of the following programs: • Assistance to the needy older women, known as the Grandmothers (Babusias) Program, and the orphans. • A shortened “Milk and Rolls” program for the youngest children in Ukrainian schools in very poor areas in Ukraine. • Help for sick children: victims of the Chomobyl disaster. • Aid to certain orphanages. • Moral support to American solders of Ukrainian descent serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas of the world. • Providing informative materials to newly arrived immigrants from Ukraine. Donations to the Social Welfare Fund greatly diminished during this reporting period. Therefore, we were only able to help the very poor and those who needed aid in very extreme cases. All fund transfers to Ukraine were conducted personally by Iryna Kurowyckyj, Sofia Hewryk, and Irena Chaban during visits to Ukraine. This process saved us money transfer costs charged by agencies. In 2006 and 2007, the UNWLA Social Welfare program had an American sponsor, Mr. Ackerman who donated the sum of $17,845, specifically for the children from the Rozdolskoho Children’s Building in the Lviv oblast. These children have ailments, such as Downs Syndrome, cerebral palsy, paralysis, and mental disorders. The funds were to be used for the children’s stay at special sanatoriums during the summer months. At this time the “Milk and Rolls” program is operational only at two Ukrainian schools: school #59 in Luhansk, school #59 (150 children) and school # 15 in Yalta, school #15 (170 children).
