millions are facing the same terrible doom, yet, of particu lar horror to us is the shocking condition of the children of Ukraine, whose tender years are no defense to the cruelty and rapacity of the Bolshevik oppressors of the Ukrainian people» Perhaps no other children have suffered so terribly and for such a long period of time, as have the children of Ukraine* Carveth ./ells, in his recent book, the "Kapoot**, states: “We ourselves happened to be passing through the Ukraine and the Caucasus in the very raidet of the famine in July, 1932» Prom the train windows, children could be eeen eating grass. The sight of small children with stomachs enormously distended is not at all uncommon in Africa or other tropical countries, but this was the first time I had ever seen white children in such a st te." Immediately fol lowing the World War, Ukraine became the hot-bed of even a more destructive civil war, which was in turn followed by the dark years of Bolshevik barbaric terrorism, reminiscent of the darkest ages of mankind, and which has continued to this very day, culminating in the present famine. Through out these long years of wars, uprisings and cruel suppress ions, the Ukrainian children have been the innocent victims of human strife and greed. Today, with the approach of the severe Ukrainian winter the position of these poor children, starving and homeless, seems even more desperate than ever before. And therefore, in view of all of these circumstances, so briefly outlined herein, we, American women of Ukrainian descent, on behalf of these children and starving kinsmen* appeal to your sense of justice and hmanity to Intercede on behalf of these millions of starving Ukrainians; and furthermore, in view of the fact that the Bolshevik author ities in their efforts to screen this terrible famine do not permit the sending of any aid whatsoever to the famine- stricken Ukraine - we appeal to you to prevail upon the American Red Cross to establish a Bed Cross base in Ukraine which shall serve as a medium of help sent by the Ukrainians and other peoples throughout the world. - 2 - UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WBICSN’ S LEAGUE of America (Mrs.) Helen D.
