• As a follow up to these discussions, I formulated a “focus group questionnaire” that was mailed to our Regional Council presidents. The goal of the questionnaire was to communicate with women in the Ukrainian community, both UNWLA members and non, and thus learn about the importance of Ukrainian community life in their lives and survey their interests. The ultimate hope was to feel the pulse of the women around us. The questionnaire was written in both English and Ukrainian and offered suggestions on how to approach the audience. Unfortunately, the response to the questionnaire was poor. A few branches at large were the only ones to respond. What conclusion can be reached by these results? • In February 2007, a notice was placed in Our Life and a letter was written to our membership announcing plans to initiate a “UNWLA E-newsletter.” We are at a time in our society that the Internet gives us the best vehicle to communicate real time without the cost and delay of mail. The newsletter is a work in progress. The hope is that such a newsletter will bring us closer together, allow us to share and get ideas, and, most importantly, spur some excitement about our work. In connection with this, all UNWLA members are invited to send short articles about past successes and events, future planned events, greeting new members, members’ achievements, awards received by your membership, and similar information to mazaiac07@gmail.com. In an attempt to obtain advertisements for Our Life, I took it upon myself to write solicitation letters to several businesses with direct ties to the Ukrainian community. We must determine who our supporters are and tap these resources. One of the most gratifying aspects of this office is to be able to acknowledge and meet successful women or men, both Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian. Along this vein, I wrote a congratulatory card to astronaut Commander Heidi Stefanyshyn Piper (October 2006) and a letter to Senator Hillary Clinton (November 2006). In preparation for the kickoff program of the XXVIII Convention, I have made personal contacts with Chrystia Freeland, the U.S. Managing Editor of the Financial Times. U.S. Congressman Maurice Hinchey was written two “thank you” e-mails—one for participating in our last Convention in Albany and the other for being the only politician to attend the Holodomor Com memorative Mass in New York City in November 2007. In February 2008, I wrote and sent a letter of condolence to Under Secretary of State Paula Dobriansky on the passing of her father, Lev Dobriansky. In my opinion, public relations also includes sharing news and accomplishments within our organization, thus encouraging branches to write articles about their activities, events, and members. This strengthens our unity. • Keeping this in mind, and as chair of the XXVII UNWLA Convention, I wrote an article entitled “Central NY Regional Council, Conventions, Elections, and Continuity,” which appeared in the February 2006 issue of Our Life. The article emphasized the many rewards of participating actively in a UNWLA convention: instilling pride, establishing a feeling of sisterhood, and firing up inspiration. • Because Public Relations and the English Press Secretary should work closely together and during this term we did not have such a secretary, I submitted a few other articles to Our Life. My interview with actress Vera Farmiga appeared in the January 2007 issue and my interview with renowned wearable art designer Maria Muchyn Archer in the April 2008 issue. In the process of sharing their thoughts, accomplishments, and successes with our members and other readers of Our Life, I was able to share with these two fascinating women information about the goals and wonderful work of our organization. At the beginning of this term, our Parliamentarian, Oksana Xenos, graciously agreed to join me and promote UNWLA public relations efforts by representing UNWLA interests in Washington, D.C. She has done so most effectively whenever invited. Thank you, Oksana! Madam President, Iryna Kurowyckyj, has continued to tirelessly represent our organization throughout the country. With the support and encouragement of our President, I can summarize my three years as Vice President of Public Relations as a time filled with learning, rewards, and accomplishments. Thank you, Madam President! XXVIII Конвенція СУА 127 www.unwla.org
