Participating in community events is the best way to foster visibility and familiarizing others about UNWLA. • On September 16, 2005, a committee comprising several Ukrainian organizations in New York (including the UNWLA) organized a banquet in honor of President Viktor Yushchenko and his wife Kateryna. The grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel in NYC was packed, and we shared a table and lively conversation with former Ambassador to Ukraine Robert Miller. • A few days before, on September 9, 2005, UNWLA and UACC, with the support of Ukraine’s General Consulate of New York sponsored a concert at King’s Borough College in Brooklyn in honor of the 14th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. This concert was part of Ukrainian American Heritage Days in New York City, which ran from September 1 through September 11 and was sponsored by these same organizations. I represented the UNWLA at the concert and read greetings to attendees. • From February 27, 2006 to March 10, 2006, the United Nations hosted the 50th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Jointly planned by the International Council of Women and the National Council of Women/USA and sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations, the afternoon program on February 28 focused on “equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes at all levels.” After this program, the UNWLA hosted a reception for conference participants at the Ukrainian Museum. Ukrainian dignitaries joined the diverse group of attendees. After helping to set up and attending this international evening, I submitted an article about the event to The Ukrainian Weekly (published in the April 9, 2006 issue). • On November 19, 2006, at Manhattan’s Essex House, I attended the 30th anniversary gala luncheon celebration of the Ukrainian Museum. All UNWLA members in attendance were asked to stand and be recognized for their organization’s foresight and steadfastness in developing this treasure for the Ukrainian community. • The Sixteenth International Conference on “Health and Environment: Global Partners for Global Solutions” was held at the United Nations on April 19 and 20, 2007. Friday, April 20 was dedicated to the legacy of Chomobyl. That morning’s session was moderated by Dr. Christine K. Durbak, Chair of World Information Transfer, and was co-sponsored by the Government of Ukraine. The informative session was followed by a luncheon whose guest speaker was Christine Todd Whitman, former EPA administrator and Governor of New Jersey. The UNWLA continues its support of the victims of this “legacy”—the children of Ukraine. • On June 7, 2007, it was my honor to represent the UNWLA and offer congratulations at the celebratory luncheon honoring His Excellency Bishop Basil Losten on his fifty years as a priest and spiritual leader. • At the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Roman Shukhevych and the 65th anniversary of UPA, held on July 8, 2007 at the SUMA Oselia in Ellenville, I laid a wreath of flowers in their memory and presented greetings from the UNWLA. • A commemorative march was held in New York City on November 17, 2007, to honor the victims of the Great Famine in Ukraine 1932-33. UNWLA representatives, including myself, walked with hundreds of other people from St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. • On November 27, 2007,1 attended an international commemorative conference on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor held at the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium of the United Nations. By making the UNWLA a visible partner in the community, we come closer to achieving our public relations goals. I have also initiated and taken responsibility for several special projects, which I felt would help invigorate our organization: • Planned a “Round Table” discussion at the annual meeting of the UNWLA Holovna Uprava held September 29 through October 1, 2006. This forum encompassed topics ranging from leadership and teamwork to membership and financial stability and preschool guidelines. 126 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
