Since that initial visit, I have been in communication with the Convention Committee chairs and have endeavored to answer their questions and offer suggestions based on past experience. • I have also had the pleasure of attending annual meetings of the New England Regional Council (March 4, 2007) and the Philadelphia Regional Council (June 3,2007). During my tenure of vice president, I learned that whether a Regional Council is large (like Detroit or Philadelphia) or small (like Central New York or New England) the branches’ work reinforces the undisputable fact that they serve as the backbone of many Ukrainian communities. During this three-year term, I wrote and mailed three circulars our Regional Council Presidents with the directives to pass them along to their branch presidents and membership. • The first was mailed in January 2006 and reinforced the need to assess our efforts on community public relations. It included suggestions on how to put a public relations plan into action. • The second was mailed in May 2007 and suggested two indispensable routes to familiarizing the non-Ukrainian community with the UNWLA: communications with politicians and voting and becoming active in local women’s organizations. • The third circular was mailed in November 2007 and gave pointers on writing a solid press release; more importantly it requested that UNWLA membership commemorate the Holodomor in their communities between November 2007 and November 2008. A sample press release to be submitted to local non-Ukrainian newspapers was attached. It appears that most branches and Regional Councils do not emphasize the need for public relations nor do they elect a public relations representative. An ongoing relationship with the non- Ukrainian community is the best path to cooperation and visibility. Public relations is vital to the long term success of all not-for-profit organizations, including ours. E-mail is a most effective tool in disseminating information both to our membership as well as to target organizations. Two “ Let’s take immediate action ” circulars were sent out to members: • The first was written in February 2006 and explained that the UNWLA, through the efforts of our President Iryna Kurowyckyj, had become a member of the Jackson Vanik coalition. UNWLA members were requested to contact their congressional representatives and ask them to take immediate action and pass House Resolution 1053. A sample letter/e-mail was attached, along with a list of fax numbers to the congressmen who had not yet co-sponsored the resolution. When the resolution finally passed and was signed into law by President George Bush on March 23, 2006, I sent out a follow-up circular requesting that thank-you letters/e-mails be written to those same representatives. • In January 2007, immediate action was requested through communication with Dr. Olenka Pevna, a past UNWLA Achievement Award recipient. One of Ukraine’s most important twelfth-century monuments, the Church of St Cyril in Alexandria in Kyiv, was in danger of being deprived of its protective status. A sample letter together with a list of appropriate contacts was attached. This matter has not yet been entirely resolved. During this term I was appointed by the Executive Committee of UNWLA to serve on the following: • In August 2007, to the Board of Directors of the Ukrainian Museum in New York, and very shortly thereafter a member of its membership committee. Every UNWLA member must take pride knowing that it was our organization’s foresight and persistence that made this wonderful institution a reality. • To represent the UNWLA in the National Committee to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-1933 and attended three meetings in 2007. This project will be ongoing and will culminate with the blessing of a memorial to the victims of the Holodomor in Washington, D.C. in November 2008. XXVIII Конвенція СУА 125 www.unwla.org
