ROKSOLANA YARYMOVYCH, LIAISON FOR MEMBERS-AT-LARGE First of all let me thank all of you for continuing your membership in the UNWLA. I also would like to thank those of you who support our causes such as scholarships, museum and other charitable UNWLA activities. The idea of Members at Large was conceived in 1978 as more and more members moved away from the large Ukrainian communities. In the fall of 2005, right after the 28th Convention in Albany, I have been introduced as your liaison by National President Iryna Kurowyckyj and Vice President for Membership Marta Danyluk. This is the first time that a non-executive committee member, on the national level, became a liaison for Members at Large. I have sent you circulars, yearly reminders about dues and subscription to OUR LIFE. I have talked to you on the phone trying to find your e-mails, changes of addresses, etc. In those three years your number has grown from 144 to 180. Some of you have been Members at Large for a long time. Some of you I have approached myself and asked to join the UNWLA. Some of you were sponsored by your mothers or grandmothers, and some of you did it on your own. The January 2006 issue of OUR LIFE magazine included an application form for the use of those who would be interested in joining the oldest and the largest independent Ukrainian-American women’s organization. In December of 2006 you were sent an attractive brochure about the UNWLA in Ukrainian as a gift from the National Board. This brochure highlights UNWLA’s history and accomplishments since its inception. An English version is also available for those that are interested. Please peruse it and be impressed by the wealth of UNWLA accomplishments throughout our existence. In December of 2007 I sent you a notice about the 28th UNWLA Convention in Detroit and encouraged you to attend it. A minimum of ten Members at Large attending the Convention can choose a delegate from their midst and participate, i.e. vote, in the Convention. The Convention Committee has invited you to come to Detroit and has sent each one of you a registration packet asking you to attend the Convention. Those of you who will come as guests are welcome to attend plenaiy sessions and take ad vantage of the seminars. The strength of our organization depends on its membership. I am sure you have read many articles in OUR LIFE about recruiting more members. Attrition is a normal phenomenon in every organization. We need the younger generation and appeal to you to encourage more of your friends to join our ranks. Guests are welcome to attend our Convention, so bring a friend. It is at the Convention that you will learn more about the workings of UNWLA. You will meet members of different ages and interests. Hopefully this meeting will give you the opportunity to find common interests and then start a Virtual Chapter from the Membership at Large. As a Member at Large you have all kinds of opportunities, depending on your skills and the time you would be willing to devote to our organization. Some Members at Large are on the National Board, and just to mention a couple of them, the English language editor of OUR LIFE Tamara Stadnychenko and National Board Parliamentarian Oksana Xenos. There are others who use their professional skills to help our orga nization in certain areas of involvement. Hopefully you too will be able to help us with your expertise. Our organization has existed for over 80 years. Our founders had a vision for this organization that is still meaningful and attractive, so let us build on what we have inherited and pass it on to future generations. We need to preserve this legacy, but we also need innovative and creative new ideas to help keep our mission attractive to the younger generation. We are taking steps to make you welcome and comfortable. At this Convention you will have access to live simultaneous translation (Ukrainian and English) and /or hearing assistance. This is a first for any Ukrainian organization. If you can, bring a friend, guests are most welcome! We need members who will embrace our mission with energy, talent, skills and innovative ideas. Write to us, criticize us, praise us, but let us know that you care. I look forward to seeing you at the Convention! You will be informed, inspired, and hopefully you will share with us some innovative ideas. 118 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
