have a committee and that working as a committee helps train future chairs. Unfortunately, only the New York Regional Council answered my call for regional conferences of various chairs. In April 2007, UNWLA President Iryna Kyrowyckyj and I drove to Rochester to meet with members of the Northern New York Regional Council. Marta Stasiuk, the president of this Regional Council, advised us that since the branches of this Region (including Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse) are located far away from each other, and that it is now harder to find people willing to run for positions in the Regional Council, even for the post of president. It was necessary to encourage members and remind them of the great work that our organization does and has done through the years. On April 29, 2007, Branches 46, 47, and 120 organized a gathering for the UNWLA and the local Ukrainian community, which we attended. I was very happily surprised to see that one of my recommendations had not gone astray but that an informative comer about the work and accomplishments of this region with photographs, documents and UNWLA publications was displayed for everyone to view. I was also very impressed to see how elderly UNWLA members are being treated and honored. A lot of older members were driven by younger members so that they could come and enjoy this gathering. To make this event more interesting, I brought 123 slides with comments about “UNWLA work for the community.” When selecting these slides, I did so with the intention of showing all UNWLA programs with the goal of showing that every woman can find something of interest to her in the work of our organization. Just as a footnote, I selected these slides from a set of260 slides with comments which form a “History of UNWLA in Slides, ” which I had prepared back in 1981. At the annual UNWLA meeting held in November 1981, these slides became part of the resolutions and it was recommended to Branches and Regional Councils to use them at various community events to widen awareness about the important work and the accomplishments of the UNWLA (see Our Life magazine, December 1981 issue, p. 7). Since that time the “History of UNWLA in Slides ” has been widely used by Branches and Regional Councils at various events. Moreover, when the UNWLA National Board was celebrating the UNWLA’s 75th anniversary in Washington, D.C., a montage of these slides was exhibited with an English-language narration. Even though I did not expect any personal recognition for the work that I did on these slides during the celebration, I was happy to witness my long-time project being used for the furtherance of knowledge about UNWLA history. I represented the UNWLA Executive Committee at the 60th anniversary of UPA, where I delivered greetings on behalf of our organization. On June 3, 2007, I represented the Executive Committee at the annual meeting of the New York Regional Council. In my remarks I delivered greetings from UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj and thanked all the branches and members for their continued support of The Ukrainian Museum in New York, both financially and as volunteers. I underscored the constant need for our members to support the Press Fund of Our Life magazine, which informs us not only about the work of our organization but also published very interesting articles about the Ukrainian women and about our community. I attended the Ukrainian Museum’s opening of the exhibit the “Thread to the Past,” which consists of Ukrainian Folk Art from the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair purchased by UNWLA and donated to the museum when it was founded. I took care of all the correspondence pertaining to organizational matters, sending out helpful materials and instructions on how to work in our organization to those who requested them. At the request of President Iryna Kurowyckyj, I helped with the reorganization of the annual reports for the Branches and Regional Councils. Every year, I analyzed the yearly reports submitted by the branches to check on their activities and see if they were holding monthly meetings, to determine the status of our membership, to see if new members were joining our organization, and to see what kind of programs branches had at their meetings. In this analysis, I found that many branches do not hold monthly meetings. Meetings should be held in a friendly atmosphere, include interesting programs, and provide organizational information about UNWLA programs, activities, and goals. To make the monthly meetings more stimulating, branches should invite speakers with interesting topics. Some of the duties of Regional Councils are to promote, support, and coordinate mutual efforts among branches and supervise their activities. XXVIII Конвенція СУА 115 www.unwla.org
