MARTA DANYLUK VICE PRESIDENT FOR ORGANIZATION AND MEMBERSHIP The responsibility of the organizational chair is very important, and the woman elected to this post must have substantial knowledge about our organization, its goals, and its structure. The duties of the organizational chair at all the three levels—Branch, the Regional Council, and National Board—are to help ensure that all UNWLA-related work, from planning to implementation, is performed according to the UNWLA bylaws, the resolutions approved at the triennial conventions (the highest legislative power of the UNWLA), and the resolutions of the National Board. In executing this work, it is very important to understand the full meaning of the word “organization.” Webster’s Dictionary defines this word as “a group of people united to do certain work.” Expanding on this definition, one can assume that membership is the basis of each organization and members work to achieve its goals. From the earliest years of its existence, the UNWLA has understood this principle and has united women of Ukrainian descent or those belonging to Ukrainian communities throughout the United States by forming branches in those communities. This is how the membership grew and became the strong basis of our organization throughout the years. Recruitment of new member is not only the responsibility of the organizational chairs; it is also the responsibility of each UNWLA member. To accomplish this goal, it is very important to have a positive attitude toward the organization, to be proud of its accomplishments and great deeds, and to show this positive attitude and pride to all prospective member. We welcome all women, especially those who have recently immigrated to the United States from Ukraine—the so-called “Fourth Wave.” Many of these women have already joined the UNWLA, and some are already serving as elected branch presidents, secretaries, and chairs of committees. Some are members of the National Board. We are very proud of our new members and hope that they will bring in more of their friends into our ranks. We should keep in mind, however, that everyone who has signed an application to become a UNWLA member works according to UNWLA bylaws and performs all duties enumerated in paragraph 10 of these bylaws. Our organization will continue to grow if our members are fully cognizant of their obligations to the organization. We should also understand that as time goes by, membership changes—in all organizations. New members join, and other members leave. Some move and join other branches or become Members-at-Large, while others leave the organization because of illness or old age. My Report as the Vice President in Charge of Organization and Membership After the XXVII UNWLA Convention, I formed the Organizational Committee, which include Vera Kushnir, a member-at-large on the Executive Committee; and Roksolana Jarymovych, a member of Branch 56. Vera Kushnir agreed to translate the organizational circulars from Ukrainian into English and also volunteered to prepare a small brochure about the UNWLA, which could be used in membership drives, especially in the recruitment of young women. Under the previous administrative term, Oxana Farion, a member of the Executive Committee, was the liaison for Members-at-Large. During this term, it was decided that the liaison for Members-at- Large should be a member on the Organizational Committee, and Roksolana Jarymovych agreed to serve in this capacity. She also agreed to prepare a register of all the Members-at-Large. (Roksolana Jarymovych’s report will follow directly after my report.) Taking into account the resolutions of the XXVII UNWLA Convention and the absolute necessity for a new UNWLA brochure to inform the public about the UNWLA structure, goals, and achievements, I started going through UNWLA archival material and, together with UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj, compiled a brochure called “A Short History of the UNWLA.” The Ukrainian editor for the brochure was Dr. Andrij Danylenko. The brochure was published in color in 2006, 3,000 copies with 10 pages of 25 photographs. The design and layout were done by Hanya Krill-Pyziur, a UNWLA member at large.
