OXANA FARION FIRST VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT The responsibilities of first vice president of the UNWLA are not a clearly stated function; some would say this is a position “without a portfolio.” Despite this ambiguity, I endeavored to assist the president wherever possible or as needed, and this involved spending time at UNWLA headquarters in New York City as well as in Matawan, New Jersey, where the administrative division of Our Life magazine was located and which is currently being used by the Scholarship Program chair. Reorga nization of both UNWLA offices was a matter of importance, because trying to direct an organization from two separate offices, in two different states, was not an easy task. This matter was rather difficult to resolve. The most significant problem was that this arrangement was very costly and burdensome for the Executive Board. Because Our Life magazine is in a chronic state of deficit, I took upon myself, as my project and main area of responsibilities, to seek solutions and to find ways to lower this deficit as much as possible. I formulated a database on my computer, recording information about all UNWLA members as well as Our Life magazine subscribers. Once every month, I mailed (electronically) labels with names and addresses to the publishing house, for mailing the current issue of Our Life magazine. I also kept an accurate record of all paid and postpaid subscribers. Some of our members do not take their obligation of submitting dues on time seriously. Letters were written and telephone calls were made, reminding them of these responsibilities. All this was conducted from my home, on my computer, because I considered these tasks to be my obligation and my privilege. In 2005, I represented the UNWLA as a delegate at the annual meeting of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) in Kyiv. In 2006, together with our President Iryna Kurovyckyj, I took an active part as a UNWLA delegate at the General Assembly of the International Council of Women (ICW), which was held in Kyiv. Hosting this event was the National Women Council of Ukraine. This was a most unique conference; we had the opportunity to meet women from many countries around the globe and to discuss various issues and problems pertaining to women. I would like to express my gratitude to our organization for giving me the opportunity to experience these unusually interesting moments at the women’s conference in our beloved Kyiv. In 2007, I again traveled to Kyiv—this time as a UNWLA delegate to the WFUWO Congress. Immediately following the congress, we participated in the yearly gathering of SKU, which was held in Donetsk, Ukraine. The traveling expenses for all of the above voyages were covered by me personally. In 2005, represented the Executive Board at the annual meeting of the Philadelphia Regional Council. In 2007, I also represented the Executive Board at annual meetings of the Philadelphia and Chicago Regional Councils. All UNWLA convention books are documentary evidence about our organization’s projects and activities, and of the achievements and accomplishments of our branches and members. These books are an important part of our UNWLA history. Thus, upon the request of the Executive Board, I took upon myself the responsibility of being a member of the Convention Book Committee, administrating all financial matters involved in the publication of the XXVIII Convention Book. In this capacity, I strived to ensure that all branches submit timely reports, pictures, and greetings to be published in the book. I also gathered information and wrote a short article on the UNWLA’s Eva Stashkiw Fund. As my term of office as first vice president draws to a close, I would like to express sincere gratitude to our President Iryna Kurovyckyj, with whom I worked in unison and harmony and true cooperation and with whom I shared moments of joy, success, and sadness. I also, wish to thank and acknowledge all members of the UNWLA Executive Board for their input and effort. And to all members of UNWLA thank you all, for your help and trust.
