Chornobyl On the 20th anniversary of the nuclear explosion in Chornobyl, many commemorative programs and exhibits were held throughout the United States. A two-day conference was held by the NGO organization International Information Transfer, under the leadership of President Christina Durbak. One of the speakers at this program was the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, His Excellency Valeriy Kuchynsky. A General Assembly was dedicated to this anniversary and included an exhibit in the lobby of the UN. The anniversary was marked by a ceremonial ringing of the Japanese Bell. During the Chornobyl Bazaar. Standing (from the left) Marta Kokolsky, Olena Kyrychenko, Iryna Kurowyckyj, Consul General of Ukraine in New York Mykola Kyrychenko, Nadia Shmigel, Victor Kryzanivsky, Ukrainian diplomat to UN, and Slava Rubel Dr. Durbak’s organization was formed right after the Chornobyl catastrophe, and each April she holds a two-day conference and luncheon at the UN. This year she invited 10 UNWLA members to attend as guests. On behalf of these members I thank the Permanent Representative to the UN His Excellency Valeriy Kuchynsky and Dr. Durbak for this invitation. Every year I attend the special program conducted for this event at the UN, and some members of UNWLA participate in the Chornobyl Bazaar at the UN. Meetings with City and Federal Officials On July 22, 2005, I was invited to breakfast with Mayor Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion. It was a working breakfast attended by 16 persons for the purpose of discussing how to better the lives of women and children. During this event, I spoke on the problem of modern day slavery of women and children. At the meeting, I asked the mayor for a proclamation for Ukrainian American Heritage Days, one that included Ukrainian Independence Day. I received the proclamation at the celebration of Women’s Suffrage Day on August 24. I went to church to hear the Independence Day mass and read the pro clamation to the congregation. I also attended the celebration of the Immigration History Week at Gracie Mansion and was given the “Directory of Services for Immigrants,” which lists only one Ukrainian diaspora organization, the UNWLA.
