UNWLA Vice President Oxana Farion, President of Ukrainian World Congress Dr. Askold Plaque Lozynsky, clergy and other visitors at the blessing of the plaque dedicated to Patriarch Joseph Slipyj. report for the Congressional Book for 2008. Financial reports are also submitted by UNWLA Social Welfare and Scholarship chairs. At the 2007 annual meeting, which was held in Donetsk, I was elected as chair of the Nominating Committee of the UWC. On September 11, 2007,1 met with UWC President Dr. Askold Lozynsky to discuss the program for the upcoming 40th anniversary of the UWC. The celebratory event was held on November 18, 2007, at the Ukrainian Museum in New York The keynote speaker for the event was the president of the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council (UWCC), Dmytro Pavlychko. At this gathering, I presented formal greetings on behalf of the WFUWO, a founding member of the UWC, and from the UNWLA. I would like to thank Dr. Askold Lozynsky for his leadership and advice. Ukrainian World Coordinating Council. Dmytro Pavlychko was elected president of the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council at the IV World Forum in Ukraine, which was held from August 18 to 21, 2006. The WFUWO proposed me to the Nominating Committee. Unfortunately the UNWLA lost its place on the board because of changes to UWCC bylaws. C o m m em orations 75th anniversary of the Great Famine in Ukraine In November 2006, under the auspices of “Obyednanyi Komitet” City of New York, I partici pated in the protest march at the New York Times Building, calling for the rescinding of Walter Duranty’s Pulitzer Prize. Most of the demonstrators were members of the UNWLA. As UNWLA president, I served as a member of a subcommittee in the World Committee on Famine in Ukraine and attended one meeting in Toronto. The UCCA formed a Famine Committee to honor the 75th anniversary of the Great Famine in Ukraine. Along with Marta Danyluk, Roma Shuhan. and Irena Chaban, I took part in this meeting. UCCA President Mykhailo Savkiv informed us that we were welcome to join a committee that already existed and had been formed without a single representative from the UNWLA. Some presidents of other organizations asked why the UNWLA president had not been invited to serve as one of the vice presidents on this committee, but Mr. Savkiv chose not to comment on this matter. I leave it to the members of our organization to determine whether UCCA’s president’s decision in this situation was appropriate in light of the UNWLA’s endeavors on behalf of victims of the Great Famine and the UNWLA’s role as a founding member of UCCA. Needless to say, as UNWLA members we ignored the implications of this decision, have attended all committee meetings, have cooperated, and have been doing what needs to be done even without a vote or a voice. In this, as in 1933, the UNWLA is focused on what is truly important—the victims of the Great Famine. 100 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
