At the XXVII Convention, the UNWLA presented the following ladies from Ukrainian Museum with a citation: Olha Hnateyko, president of the Board of Directors; Maria Shust, executive director of the museum; and Daria Bajko, administrator. Because none of these ladies was able to attend the convention, the awards were presented in absentia; I later presented the citations, along with bouquets of flowers, to the three women at an annual membership meeting of the museum. The Ukrainian Museum in New York celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006. In my capacity as UNWLA President, I greeted those attending on behalf of our organization and accepted a plaque that was presented to the UNWLA for founding the museum and continuously supporting its needs. I attended all of the openings of the exhibits as well as most of the Board of Directors meetings and Executive Committee meetings. It was a pleasure being part of this wonderful institution and participating in its growth and development. T he UNWLA and O ther O rganizations The UNWLA is member of World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations and was one of the principal founders and contributors to this world body, which was founded in 1948. WFUWO holds annual meetings and hosts a congress every five years. During this administration there were 3 annual meetings: 2004 in Rome, 2005 and 2006 in Kyiv. The IX WFUWO Congress was held in Kyiv, Ukraine in 2007. As UNWLA president, I wrote and submitted to WFUWO three annual reports and one 5 year report, which is published in the organization’s Congressional Book. Our Social Welfare and Scholarship chairs submit the financial reports to WFUWO annually. I would like to congratulate President Maria Szkambara for leading this women’s organization and for her dedication to the cause of women throughout the world. International Council of Women and National Council of Women. The UNWLA became a member of NCW/USA in 1952, but from the time of the founding of the UNWLA, there was an exchange of correspondence and cooperation between the two organizations. When the UNWLA joined the NCW/USA, every president was on the Board of Directors, and through the years, many served in the organization’s executive committee as president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. For the past nine years, your president has been serving as the main representative of International Council of Women to the United Nations. Because of my involvement with these two organizations, I attended the ICW General Assembly in Perth, Australia. It was during this event that I recommended that the ICW consider holding its next General Assembly in Kyiv, Ukraine. The proposal was accepted, and I was truly proud to have influenced such an important decision—one that underscores the new opportunities for the women of Ukraine and the international recognition now accorded to them. From September 1 to 12, 2006, UNWLA Vice President Oxana Farion and I attended the ICW General Assembly in Kyiv. It was a grand moment for us. I attended the event as ICW’s UN representative; I also represented the National Council of Women /USA because the NCW president was unable to attend. I thus presented two reports: one as the UN rep and the other as NCW’s proxy president. As ICW’s UN rep, I was a speaker at a NGO UN seminar on slavery. My topic at this event was “How to Stop Trafficking of Women.” I wrote annual reports as UN representative and three Welcoming sign for ICW delegates year reports. ICW’s UN team consists of 5 members. in front of House of Ukraine 98 XXVIII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
