OXANA FARION THIRD VICE PRESIDENT FOR CULTURAL AFFAIRS OF THE UNWLA Following the XXVI Convention of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA) held in Sarasota, Florida, in 2002, I prepared an Activity Plan for the Cultural Committee, which was approved by the Executive Board. This Activity Plan included a delineation of the responsibilities of the Cultural Representative, a calendar for suggested events, and prepared reference materials to assist Regional Councils and Local Branches in the preparation and execution of interesting and varied UNWLA activities. Suggested program themes included celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the death of Lesia Ukrainka and commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Holodomor. In September 2002, all UNWLA Regional Councils and Branches received this plan, along with supporting materials and references, to assist them in preparation and planning activities in honor of our famous poetess, Lesia Ukrainka, and the Kosach Family. At the end of 2002, the 2003 Petro and Lesia Kovaliv Literature Competition was announced. The jury members were Dr. Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak, Dr. Valentyna Borysenko, Dr. Ludmyla Tamashynska, writer Nadia Svitlychna, and Dr. Taras Hunczak. The laureates of the Petro and Lesia Kovaliv Prize for Literature were announced in the spring of 2003. Two authors were honored: Dr. Vera Wowk, for Poetry, Prose & Theater, and Martha Tarnawsky for Keys to the Kingdom. The award presentation took place on November 30, 2003 in Philadelphia, PA. The year 2003 was the 70th Anniversary of the Holodomor. Suggestions for programs and reference materials to assist in planning commemorative events were distributed to Regional Councils and Branches in August. A major initiative was to include programs specifically geared to the general American public. A slide presentation about the Holodomor, featuring collages by American-born artist Lida Bodnar-Balahutrak, was prepared. Ms. Bodnar-Balahutrak combines Christian iconography with images of the Great Famine, replacing sacred images with photographs of Holodomor victims. Each slide was captioned in English, which explained the Holodomor, and was available for loan to UNWLA members. At the end of 2003, the 2004 Petro and Lesia Kovaliv Science Competition was announced. The jury members were Dr. Natalia Pazuniak, Dr. Asya Humecky, and Dr. Andrij Homiatkewych. The winner of the 2004 Petro and Lesia Kovaliv Prize for scientific studies in the Ukrainian language was Dr. Andrew Danylenko, who authored “Predicate, Declinations & Diathesis in Ukrainian: Historical & Typologic Aspects.” The jurists felt that this seminal academic work fulfilled the requirements and intent of the competition. The award ceremony will take place in Albany during the XXVII Convention of the UNWLA in Albany, NY. A significant part of the Cultural Committee’s work is focused on UNWLA publications. The long awaited book, History o f the UNWLA, has entered a second phase of rewriting. A new publication has been initiated and funded by a member of our Cultural Committee, Ms. Natalia Danylenko. Entitled Ukrainian Women in History, the book will highlight women’s contributions to the advancement and growth of Ukrainian culture and academia. Edited by Dr. Valentyna Borysenko and Dr. Martha Boha chevsky-Chomiak, the work will be published by Lybid in Kyiv, Ukraine. More detailed information about the book and its presentation will be included in the program of our XXVII Convention in Albany. For the convention book 2005, I have prepared an article on the history of the Petro and Lesia Kovaliv Fund's Literature-Science Competition. Using research materials from Our Life magazine, previously published UNWLA convention books, minutes of Executive Board meetings, and UNWLA archives, I compiled a document listing each year’s winner(s), jury panelists, and the titles of winning publications. During my tenure as Vice President for Cultural Affairs, I represent the UNWLA at many conventions and meetings. In October 2002, I attended the Congress of the World Federation of XXVII Конвенція СУА 83 www.unwla.org
