• On September 7, 2003,1 represented the Executive Committee at the Northern New York Regional Council's annual meeting, in Rochester, NY. The meeting was well prepared and included a luncheon for all members of the region and invited guests. I had the opportunity to address the guests at the luncheon and inform the attendees about the construction status of the new Ukrainian Museum building and the museum’s plans for an inaugural exhibition. The Ukrainian-American community in Rochester has an extremely active and generous fundraising committee: “Friends of the Ukrainian Museum.” Its organizers are Mr. Myron and Mrs. Irene Russnak, enthusiastic supports of the Ukrainian Museum. • I prepared and distributed informative folders to presidents of all branches and regions. Each folder included information pertaining to the responsibilities of the officers and presidents of branches and regional councils, membership application forms, and material about methods for recruiting new members to the organization. The distributed information is extremely important for the successful execution of the branch leadership’s responsibilities and the recruitment of new members to the organization. • On March 21, 2004, jointly with President of UNWLA, I attended the annual meeting of the New England Regional Council, which was held in the Ukrainian National Home in Hartford, Connecticut. The region currently has four branches. On November 2, 2003, Branch 66 was dissolved. Dionisia Brochinski was elected president of the Regional Council. • On June 6, 2004,1 represented the Executive Board at the Philadelphia Region’s annual meeting. The meeting was very well attended; all branches were represented and reported extensively on their activities. As the representative of the Executive Board, I informed the attendees of the forthcoming 2005, 27th UNWLA Convention, which is to be held in Albany, NY. • On November 4, 2004, during the Annual Board Meeting, I prepared and organized a workshop for regional chairs and chairs of the branches-at-large. The following subjects were reviewed in detail during the workshop: organizational issues of the regions, review of membership lists, responsibilities of officers of each branch and region, and new membership recruitment techniques. • In November 2004, jointly with the UNWLA president and the editor of Our Life, I visited Ukraine and transmitted funds for humanitarian help for those who were demonstrating on Kyiv’s Independence Square. President Iryna Kurowyckyj and I then traveled to the city of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, where we met with the leadership of the local branch of the Ukraine’s Women’s League (Soyuz Ukrainok). Accompanied by Ms. Ivanna Kolesnyk, president of the branch, we visited school 59, the only Ukrainian language school in the city. I was impressed with the dedication and perseverance of these women; they work under very difficult circumstances. Upon returning to Kyiv, I purchased and mailed two packages of Ukrainian language books to Luhansk’s school 59. Among the books were five volumes of Harry Potter’s adventures, translated into Ukrainian. • On behalf of the UNWLA, I serve on the Board of the Ukrainian Museum in NYC as chair of the museum’s Program Committee. The regional meetings that I had the pleasure of attending were very well prepared and executed in a businesslike manner. The reports presented at the meetings reflected individual branches’ valuable contribution to our organization. The strength and effectiveness of any organization depends on its membership. In the case of our present-day UNWLA, membership is continuously declining, especially among seniors, who are most devoted to the organization. Unfortunately, many middle-aged women tend to lose interest in active participation in the organization and many younger members often work spontaneously, sometimes disregarding the UNWLA by-laws. From the information submitted in annual reports from Branches and Regional Councils, it is clear that many branches do not hold monthly branch meetings; some hold such meetings only once a year. It is difficult to ascertain whether this phenomenon is generated by the seniority of our members, members relocating farther from the community center, or as a result of alienation-assimilation.
