Avenue in New York City were purchased to house the museum's original collection. This first museum was opened in 1976 and was incorporated as an independent entity. The initial collection was modest and comprised artifacts purchased from various parts of Ukraine for $2,225 for an exhibit at the World Exposition in Chicago in 1933. Since the museum was founded, the UNWLA has been the institution's most generous and most active supporter. The UNWLA retains a 51% share of voting power on the museum's board of directors and provides continuous physical and financial support. We can be proud that construction on the new museum was begun and completed was during the tenure of Olha Hnateyko's presidency. On behalf of the UNWLA I congratulate her for all her efforts. Like Alexandra Riznyk, the Ukrainian Museum's first president, Ms. Hnateyko is a member of the UNWLA. Each UNWLA president also serves as first vice- president on the Board of the Museum. In this capacity, I attended most of the Executive Committee meetings, Board Meetings, and Annual Meetings of the museum. For many years, UNWLA Branches have worked on various fundraising events to support the Building Fund of the Ukrainian Museum. UNWLA Branches and individual members have made very generous donations to the Museum’s Building Fund. Taissa Turiansky has very diligently calculated all the contributions made to the Ukrainian Museum by UNWLA Branches, members, and their families up to the year 2002. The total contributed is an impressive $3.5 million. This amount does not include the museum's use of two floors of the UNWLA building for the past 29 years, for which the museum paid a symbolic rent of two dollars per annum. The fair market value of rent for these two floors for nearly three decades is estimated at one million dollars. Besides providing financial support for the Ukrainian Museum, UNWLA Branches and members have also generously donated many art objects to expand the museum's collection, made donations to the museum store, and volunteered countless hours of service. I congratulate and thank the president of the Ukrainian Museum, Olha Hnateyko; the members of the Board of Trustees; the director of the Museum, Maria Shust; the administrator of the Museum, Daria Bajko; and all the employees and volunteers for their wonderful work and for their friendship. L i t e r a r y A w a r d s The Lesia and Petro Kovaliv Literary Awards were presented at the XXVI UNWLA Convention and in Philadelphia in 2003. The net profits in the amount of $2,000 from the beautiful awards presentation luncheon were donated to the Press Fund of Our Life. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Oxana Farion, vice president for the cultural affairs, and to Christine Chomyn-Izak, president of the Philadelphia Regional Council, for organizing and hosting this elegant event.
