I was also invited to speak on the Great Famine at the Literary Club of New York and to represent the UNWLA as a member of the committee organized by Ambassador Kuchynsky to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Holodomor. At the UN, there were numerous programs dedicated to the Great Famine, including an exhibit of documents. Many of those displayed came from the UNWLA archives and were prepared for the exhibit by the Ukrainian Museum in New York. Lysty tak dovho ydut' One of the highlights of the XXVI UNWLA Convention, held in 2002, was the formal presentation of Lysty tak dovho ydut', a tribute to Ukraine's great poetess Lesia Ukrainka, meticulously compiled and annotated by author Svitlana Kucherha. The material for this publication was found in Czech National Library in Prague where numerous letters to and from Lesia Ukrainka were discovered. Hidden behind bookshelves, these documents had survived the communist regime and are a priceless treasure to scholars and others interested in Ukraine's literary legacy. When Dr. Joanna Ratych was informed about the extraordinary collection of documents, she was moved to sponsor the publication of a book that would prove to be a jewel for the UNWLA and for Ukrainians worldwide. Dr Ratych also graciously agreed to sponsor the second edition of the book in Ukraine, and it has since been distributed to many libraries and learning institutions. The formal presentation of the second edition was held in the building of the Union of Writers in Kyiv. In attendance were guest form the literary world; Verkhovna Rada deputies Hennadiy Udovenko, Lilia Hryhorovych, and others; and Ukrainians from around the world who had come to Kyiv to attend the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council’s meeting chaired by UWCC president, Mykhailo Horyn. Also present were Dr Marta Bohachevsky-Chomiak and author Svitlana Kucherha. The project was chaired by Irena Chaban, who was instrumental in organizing the presentation. Our Life Our Life is the only Ukrainian women’s magazine to be published continually for 60 years. In 2004, the Executive Committee of the UNWLA proclaimed 2004 the Year of Our Life. The intent of this proclamation was twofold: to celebrate the magazine's 60th anniversary and to launch a fundraising effort to ensure the magazine's continued existence. We live in the richest country in the world, yet our magazine is a poor reflection of this wealth. Simple in appearance and constantly struggling to stay within a tight budget while facing rising publication costs, the magazine is in a precarious state. This is an unfortunate reality, one that needs to be addressed quickly and decisively. Our Life is a mirror of the UNWLA; its pages tell the world who we are and what we do. Without it, we would be silent no one would know about our work. I would like to thank all of the individuals who have financially supported the magazine and to acknowledge the generous contribution that came from Regional Council of New York. During their 60th anniversary celebration, the Region hosted a fundraising event that garnered $28,000 for the support of Our Life. For this, we are especially indebted to Stefania Kosovych, who chaired the event, and to Nadia Sawczuk, president of the Regional Council. I would also like to express our gratitude to Branch 56 for its generous contribution of $8,755. During the six years I have served as president of the UNWLA, I have written monthly columns for Our Life, sharing with readers in Ukrainian and English news about the organization and information about other topics pertaining to women's issues. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tamara Stadnychenko for doing a wonderful job as our English-language editor and Irena Chaban for her work on the Ukrainian pages of the magazine. Ukrainian Museum in New York The museum is another monumental initiative of the UNWLA, one which began during the XVII UNWLA Conventions.
