This proposal has been confirmed by members of the General Assembly of the International Council of Women. U krainian W orld C oordinating C ouncil (Annual dues $300) The UNWLA became a member of this organization in 2002. At the III Forum, UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj was elected to the Board. In 2003 and 2004, I attended the organization's meetings in Kyiv. In 2005, since I was in Kyiv for the inauguration, I met with the President of UWCC and was briefed on plans for the IV Forum. An article on this history of the UNWLA was published in UWCC magazine No. 3/2004. UNWLA Aid to Ukraine Throughout the United States, many demonstrations were held protesting the violation of human rights, during the first two rounds of elections in Ukraine. In my capacity as UNWLA president, I spoke at two of these demonstrations: at the Ukrainian Consulate in New York and in front of the United Nations. I was also among the delegates to present the Consul General of Ukraine with a list of grievances to be relayed to the President of Ukraine. During this trying period for Ukraine and its people, I was interviewed twice by public radio and several times by Associated Press about my thoughts on the Orange Revolution; I was also invited to comment on the election on CBS's “Morning Show.” One of my letters, a response to on an article written about Ukraine, was published in the New York Post. At this time, I would like to pay tribute to all of you for your immediate and generous response to the UNWLA’s call for humanitarian aid for Ukraine as these events were unfolding. As the tent city on the Maidan went up, I commissioned Mr. Taras Chaban to borrow $2,000 on behalf of the UNWLA in Kyiv; the borrowed funds ensured immediate aid in the form of medicine, food, and warm clothing. At the same time, I also requested Our Life editor Irena Chaban to write a letter of support from our organization to those who had gathered in Kyiv to support Viktor Yushchenko and democracy. The letter was faxed to channel 5 in Kyiv; a copy was also read aloud to those gathered on the Maidan. In the days to follow, Sophia Hewryk, Irena Chaban, and I personally delivered to Ukraine the contributions forwarded to UNWLA Headquarters. Because of the UNWLA's generous support for the people on the Maidan, I was invited to attend the inauguration of the Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko. It was a privilege to represent the UNWLA at this momentous event. I would also like share with you information about more somber events in Ukraine. Upon hearing about the mining accidents in Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk and the tragic accident in the airport of Lviv, our organization responded very quickly. From November 15 through November 24, Social Welfare Chair Barbara Bachynsky and I visited the three cities where hundreds were hurt and killed. On behalf of the UNWLA, we distributed $250 to each child orphaned or injured during these sad events. Our visit to Ukraine during this time was punctuated by many emotions. We wept at the suffering of the children. We XXVII Конвенція СУА 65 www.unwla.org
