IRYNA KUROWYCKYJ PRESIDENT As I end my second year as president of the UNWLAI would like to thank each and every one of you for giving me the opportunity to lead this organization during two consecutive terms. As president, I have tried to work within the framework of the UNWLA by-laws and resolutions that were voted upon at the 26th UNWLA Convention. I have also represented the UNWLA at numerous community events and international conferences, conventions, and meetings. Both of my terms as president were filled with many somber and happy moments. Like many of you, I was saddened by the deaths of UNLWA members who gave many years of devoted service to our organization. Like many of you, I was elated by the success of UNWLA programs and projects that are represent the tradition of our organization. Like many of you, I was privileged to witness the Orange Revolution in Ukraine and experience the joy of seeing Viktor Yushchenko triumph over adversity and be inaugurated as Ukraine's democratically elected president. C e l e b r a t i n g 8 0 Y e a r s o f t h e U N W L A This year, the UNWLA is celebrating its 80th birthday. Our organization is the oldest Ukrainian women’s organization in this country. Many years ago. one of my predecessors, Helen Lototsky, compared our organization to a tree. It was a wonderful comparison, because as an organization we are as big and strong as a tree, blessed with strong branches. Each member of our organization is like a beautiful leaf to be cherished and admired as a precious, living, and vital part of the tree. If one of the leaves glows in the light of a special accomplishment, we are happy. If one of the leaves is shadowed by times of sorrow or ill health or trouble, we are troubled. For 80 years, our members have supported each other, celebrated with each other, laughed with each other, and cried with each other. We have also extended caring and compassion to others. In the span of 80 years, our help for the needy has exceeded $8 million. By stretching a helping hand to others, we have changed many lives. Because of the UNWLA, a child in Kharkiv was able to start his school day with a glass of milk and a roll. Because of the UNWLA, a grandmother in Lviv was given a warm coat to protect her from the chilly winter wind. Because of the UNWLA, a young Brazilian girl from a destitute family was given the opportunity to attend school. Because of the UNWLA, a child suffering from the aftereffects of the Chomobyl nuclear disaster was properly diagnosed and treated. Because of the UNWLA, a lonely and aging member of a Ukrainian-American community receives baskets or boxes of holiday treats that reminds her she has not been forgotten. Each of these examples is a symbol of our work. Each can be multiplied a thousand times, creating a pattern of giving and caring that has lasted for eight decades. We should be proud of these accomplishments, but our pride should be grounded in the knowledge that the UNWLA can work only as long as it has an active and energetic membership.
