UNWLA BRANCH 120 - ROCHESTER, NY NORTHERN NEW YORK STATE REGIONAL COUNCIL Since its inception in 1982, Branch 120 has been involved in promoting and preserving the culture and traditions of members' Ukrainian parents and grandparents (most of members are U.S. born). Though we have only 11 members, the branch unites age groups from the early 20s to the late 50s. Our members are talented professionals who share common interests. Among our members are an elected town councilwoman; educators; members who sit on boards of local (both Ukrainian and American) organizations (business and non-profit); organizers of tutorial programs for our newest immigrant children to help them meet the standards of the New York State Department of Education; and public relations professionals. The focus of Branch activities is nurturing our children and drawing them into Ukrainian life through their nursery school “Svitlychka,” which exposes them weekly to the language, culture and traditions of their forefathers and provides an environment in which they learn important social skills. Our two youngest Branch members, Nickole Riedl and Larissa Cholach, remember the nurturing and loving environment of their formative years at “Svitlychka.” Two years ago, both women volunteered to assume the pedagogical duties of “Svitlychka.” Through song, poems, arts and crafts, story time, and guest speakers, a new theme is introduced and developed with the children each week of the school year. “Svitlychka” presents four special events for the Rochester Ukrainian community during the year: preparation and Blessing of the Traditional Easter Baskets, a Mother’s Day concert, a Moving-Up ceremony for the children, and the Christmas concert with the traditional visit of St. Nicholas. Under the able and dedicated administration of Daria Hanushevsky for the past twelve years, “Svitlychka” has grown and prospered. In the name of the past and present children who attended “Svitlychka” and participated in its programs, $5,000 was donated to the Ukrainian Museum in New York City to fund a children’s kiosk. The Branch has established for itself a reputation of baking delicious “rohalyky,” which have become the centerpiece of our major biannual fundraisers and are always sold out quickly. During these events, Branch members sell Ukrainian Easter eggs, gerdany, and hand painted ceramics. Because of the diverse schedules of our membership, a full group picture was not possible; therefore, we have chosen to list our members as of 2004: Irene Grassman, president; Luba Dinger, vice president; Zinnia Dzus-Debole, secretary; Daira Hanushevsky, treasurer; Marika Riedl, educational chair; Larissa Cholach, Lydia Dzus, Christine Hoshowsky, Nickole Riedl, Halya Snihur, Lesia Telega. Svitlychka’s St. Nicholas Concert, Dec. 2004. Pre Christmas Bake Sale, Dec. 2004. Adults (I to r): Nickole Riedl, Rev. Kiril Angelov (Pastor L to r: Zinnia Dzus-Debole, Daria Hanushevsky, Luba of St. Josaphat Church), Larissa Cholach.
