TAMARA STADNYCHENKO ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITOR The first issue of Our Life was published in January 1944. When it was first conceived, Our Life was envisioned as a unifying instrument, which would make a statement about the UNWLA and the women who belonged to the organization. Strangers in a strange land, they would have something unique and powerful: a publication that connected them to their past while helping them embrace their future. Through the efforts of UNWLA leaders and the magazine's editors, Our Life has evolved over the last sixty years into a bilingual monthly that is mailed to UNWLA members, distributed to sister organizations in Ukraine, and shared with U.S. government officials, the media, and the public at large. Today, Our Life continues to function as a link to Ukraine and a forum that allows UNWLA members to express their opinions, share their concerns, and report on their successes. Our Life informs, enlightens, and entertains a wide spectrum of readers by providing a wide range of articles, stories, and reports about UNWLA activities and programs. In achieving this, its bilingual format is one of its most important features because it includes rather than excludes those whose knowledge of the Ukrainian language is limited or nonexistent. Our Life has a proud tradition and I am very proud to be a part of this tradition. In fact, last year, I celebrated my 10th anniversary as English language editor. While there is always room for improvement, I am modestly pleased about the direction the English-language pages of Our Life have taken over the past three years. Our president, Iryna Kurowyckyj, has been one of Our Life's most diligent contributors and has shared information about her own activities and those of the UNWLA Executive Committee and National Board in each month's issue. One very wonderful addition to every issue published in 2004, the 60th anniversary of our magazine, was the inclusion of translations of archival materials from 1944, the year Our Life was first published. These articles and letters and reports are fascinating in their own right, but many are also fascinating because they attest to the fact that the UNWLA's work has remained constant. They also show that the concerns and questions raised in the past are universal concerns and questions that, in some cases, are still a challenge. Another note of thanks goes to Dzvinka Martiuk Zacharczuk for sharing some insights into the UNWLA and its members during the 1950s. Since I assumed the position of English-language editor, I have worked very hard to encourage UNWLA members, branches, regional councils, and committee chairs to submit reports about their activities and projects for publication. A review of the indexes that I compiled for the year-end issues of 2002, 2003, and 2004, shows that these have been fairly productive endeavors. In 2002, there were six articles from Branches and Regional Councils; in 2003, there were seven; and in 2004, there were seven. A review of the materials already published this year, shows that the trend is continuing. These articles, and the accompanying photographs, tell an interesting story about the women in our organization and attest to their multi-faceted interests, talents, and backgrounds. Such articles reflect the diversity of the women who belong to this organization; they also reflect the color and flavor of our heritage and underscore the eclectic nature of our branches and their members. Sadly missing from this mosaic were regular articles from the chairs of UNWLA committees During the past three years, we have published a wide range of articles on assorted subjects of interest to our membership and other readers. For easy reference, I have subdivided these into categories. Arts, Culture, and Literature. The eleven articles in the category have included short stories, an interview with author Irene Zabytko by Honorary President Anna Krawczuk, a history of the Chumaky and the Ukrainian salt-trade by Helene-Turkewycz Sanko, and two interesting articles on contemporary Ukrainian theatre by Virlana Tkacz. We have also published several book reviews by Marta Tamawsky. Liz Kuczer contributed an excellent article on archaeological excavations in Baturvn, and Borys 118 XXVII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
