Southeastern Europe.” Although the opportunity for questioning was somewhat limited, I did manage to lodge an inquiry at the end of the panel presentations: “What is being done to curtail, or at least control, the demand for human trafficking that is obviously fueling the whole problem?” A number of the panelists, including the presiding Congressman, noted that my question was “right on,” and agreed that demand was the real problem. Yet, interestingly, there had not been any mention of the contributing factor of demand at any time during the hours-long panel presentations. On February 17, 2004, I attended an “Action Ukraine Coalition” round-table discussion (“Ukraine at the Crossroads”) hosted by Metropolitan Soroka at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family in Washington, DC. The meeting addressed Ukrainian community concerns about recent events, specifically the November presidential election in Ukraine, in an effort to coordinate community action. On March 17, 2004, I attended the “Action Ukraine 2004 Working Lunch with U. S. Congressman Curt Weldon” at the Washington, DC, offices of the Citizens Network of Foreign Affairs. The discussions focused on the November presidential election in Ukraine and the U. S. Government’s posture toward the election. The session was attended by prominent U. S. Treasury and State Department officials, U. S. and Ukraine embassy officials, representatives of various Ukrainian national organiza tions, and American and Ukrainian media personnel. On May 18, 2004, at the invitation of Professor William Gleason, Chair of Advanced Ukrainian Studies at the U. S. State Department’s Foreign Service Institute, I delivered a guest lecture to a class of students shortly before their deployment to Ukraine to assume assignments at the U. S. Embassy in Kyiv. The topic of my seminar was “Ukrainian Women in 2004: Perspectives and Activities of the UNWLA.” My lecture was part of a series of seminars conducted by the Foreign Service Institute’s Europe Area Studies Program, which has featured lectures by prominent officials of the U. S. Congress and the U. S. Department of State, including, most recently, Ambassadors Carlos Pascual and Steven Mann. On June 13, 2004,1 delivered a panel presentation on the topic of “Improving Our Professionals’ Organizations” at The Washington Group’s (TWG) Leadership Conference in Arlington, VA. After wards, I gave an interview to Voice of America on the activities of the UNWLA, which was scheduled for broadcast on July 7, 2004. On August 3, 2004,1 attended a conference with U. S. Ambassador John Herbst and his deputy at the U. S. Department of State. ATTENTION! All Federal Employees!
