Koubech, OSBM, was elected to head the Basilian Fathers and is presently in Rome. Previously, Rev. Jeremiah Ferenc was appointed Bishop of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church for Brazil. All three were UNWLA Scholarship recipients and we congratulate their sponsors for making these achievements possible. Although we are still sending stipends to these countries, their numbers have fallen due to lack of sponsors. Many UNWLA sponsors have chosen to sponsor students in Ukraine rather than other countries and we must comply with their wishes. For this reason, the many applications from South America cannot be accepted. Despite this, Ukrainian-Brazilians continue their work in the field of education. They still run Sunday schools and boarding schools in the cities. The Colegio Santa Olga in Prudentopolis, Parana, run by the Catechists of the Sacred Heart, houses girls of Ukrainian descent. Their program includes Ukrainian studies, religious instruction, and classes on Ukrainian culture and traditions. Many of the students are orphans or from broken homes. St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Curitiba, Parana, is governed by a new generation of Basilian Fathers, most of them former UNWLA scholarship recipients. This is truly a miracle, since the first immigrants from Ukraine to Brazil came in the 1880’s. In the state of Parana the Ukrainian language is still a mandatory second language in public middle schools, a great achievement of Ukrainian- Brazilians, which was instituted more than twelve years ago. It was with sadness that Ukrainians in Brazil received the news of the passing of their most generous sponsor and benefactor Mykola Bojczuk. On the 40th day of his passing, memorial services for the repose of his soul were held in Curitiba and Prudentopolis. Parana, Brazil; Rome, Italy; and Stamford, Connecticut, USA. E A S T E R N D IA S P O R A O F U K R A IN E We have expanded our program to include Uzbekistan and Georgia. Ukrainians in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, founded a Ukrainian Cultural Center “Bat'kivshchyna” (Fatherland) in 1993 and celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2003. They have a Sunday Ukrainian studies school and they also care for orphaned ethnic Ukrainian children. I met Valentina Takajeva, the president of this organization in Kyiv in 2003. Since then, she has recommended students to our program and several stipends have been awarded. Currently, we are in receipt of 45 applications from our contact in Georgia as well. Ukrainian nationals are an ethnic minority in the Eastern Diaspora of Ukraine and do not always have rights and/or citizenship in some of the countries in which they live. U N W L A S C H O L A R S H IP P R O G R A M C O N T IN U E S Since 1997, the UNWLA Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program continues its activity in the office located at 171 Main Street, Matawan, New Jersey. The office can be reached by telephone at 732- 741-9530 and by fax at 732-441-9377. I believe that our program, which was established in 1967, has had a tremendous impact on the students who have benefited from the stipends the UNWLA awards. Due to the cooperation of UNWLA Branches, Regional Councils, and individual members who are sponsors or hosting fundraisers for our program, we are able to continue awarding stipends to hundred of students each year. Our gratitude goes to all the sponsors and benefactors. Without their generosity, we would not be able to do so. At this time I also want to express my gratitude to Soyuz Ukrainok in Ukraine and to all those who recommend students to us and who works with us. Their cooperation and participation in our joint project has been invaluable. Most of all, I would like thank the parents, teachers, and professors who work so hard to raise and mold generations of Ukrainians in their respective countries. Their task is the hardest of all. 108 XXVII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
