speaker. It was heartwarming for me to listen to the praise from the delegates of other countries, on behalf of students who were UNWLA scholarship recipients. My participation at the WCU Congress also gave me an opportunity to meet representatives from the Eastern Diaspora of Ukraine, including Georgia, Kazakhstan, Tatarstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Moldavia, and others, and eventually to expand our program into some of these countries. During our stay in Ukraine, UNWLA Welfare Chair, Barbara Bachynsky and I visited and met with the parents and children in Ivankiv, Chomobyl zone. This was a very moving experience. I personally covered the costs of this and all other trips. After the Congress, UNWLA Honorary President Anna Krawczuk and I met with the Scholarship Committee of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, headed by Alla Debeliuk. When we raised the question of increasing the amount of stipends to be awarded to future recipients, Alla Debeliuk and other SUU Scholarship committee members asked us to increase the number of scholarship recipients instead. We also met with some of the students they recommended for the program, who greeted us with flowers. While in Kyiv, meetings with Tamara Melnyk and Ella Lamakh and some of the students they recommended for the program were held. These meetings were very informative; the students we met seemed very ambitious and studious. Many expressed their love for Ukraine and their belief in a brighter future for their homeland. All expressed gratitude to their sponsors and to the UNWLA. We also visited Lviv, where we met with members of Lviv oblast Soyuz Ukrainok and Iryna Kravchuk. Again, the question of higher stipends surfaced and we received the same reply as in Kyiv—to increase the number of students instead. Our hosts informed us that they are constantly faced with difficult choices in recommending students because there are so many needy and deserving students that qualify. In October 2004,1 attended the memorial services for one of out most generous sponsors, Mykola Bojczuk. Mr. Bojczuk and his late wife Mae sponsored hundreds of students in Brazil and Argentina for more than 25 years. Their generosity included building a boarding school for Colegio Santa Olga in Prudentopolis, Parana, Brazil, and purchasing a Ukrainian Student Home in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil. They were also very supportive of Ukrainian youth organizations in the United States, such as PLAST and SUM. In my eulogy, I expressed my sympathy to the family and presented them with our UNWLA Scholarship Booklets, in which we have always honored Mr. and Mrs. Bojczuk for their generous support. At the invitation of the UNWLA New Jersey Regional Council president Kateryna Wolowodiuk, I participated in the Council's 45th anniversary celebration, held in October 2004. During the event, I acknowledged all the New Jersey Branches (4, 18, 24, 28, 65, 70, 75, 86, 92, 98, and 100) for their long term support of the UNWLA Scholarship Program and presented each Branch with a Certificate of Appreciation. Members of the UNWLA Scholarship Program Committee were recognized as well. Many members and guests showed a great interest in the UNWLA Scholarship Program exhibit. As in prior years, the New Jersey Regional Council is in first place in the amount of donations, in sponsorships, and in the number of students sponsored, with Branch 86 leading the way. U K R A IN E In the past three years, the most stipends were awarded to students in Ukraine: 1,222 stipends in the amount of $199, 650. However, we still have more deserving and qualified applicants than sponsors. We are in receipt of many patriot and moving letters from participants of the “Orange Revolution” of December of 2004. The writers express their love for their country and their willingness to suffer for a brighter future for their nation. It was the youth of Ukraine that showed their faces and power during those important moments in the history of Ukraine. B R A Z IL and A R G E N T IN A We are happy to announce and wish to congratulate Rev. Volodymyr Koubech, OSBM, on his elevation to assistant Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Brazil.
