MARIA POLANSKYJ, CHAIR UNWLA SCHOLARSHIP/STUDENT SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM Mission Statement: Enhance and create opportunities through education and preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage within and outside o f the United States o f America. UNWLA Scholarship/Student Scholarship Program Committee. From left: M. Orysia Jacus, Scholarship treasurer since 1988past Scholarship Chair Luba Bilowchtchuk, Scholarship Chair Maria Polanskyj, Anna Krawczuk, Honorary President and former Scholarship Chair (1981-1993). Back row: Dr. Daria Nowakiwsky-Lissy and Victoria Mischenko, Scholarship Office administrators. It was a great honor for me to be elected to the UNWLA National Board at the XXVI Convention in 2002 to chair the UNWLA Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program, which has been operating without interruption since 1967.1 was pleasantly surprised and grateful when my predecessor, along with her committee members and Dr. Daria Nowakiwsky Lissy, volunteered to continue working with me during my tenure as chair. I realized then that our program would be in good hands and it is. I thank each of them and congratulate them on a job well done! The Committee’s volunteer hours for routine office work totaled more than 14,000 hours and Daria Lissy’s efforts brought the UNWLA Scholarship Program quarterly grants of $500 from Exxon/Mobil Employee Volunteer Matching Time Program. We are very grateful for the financial support, and these funds have been put to good use. At the invitation of the UNWLA's New Jersey Regional Council, I participated in Soyuzianka Day in October 2002, which was dedicated to the UNWLA Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program. My presentation was entitled “Children of Ukraine: Future of Their Nation” was well received, was followed by a very lively discussion, and was instrumental in recruiting new program sponsors. In May 2003, I was invited to visit UNWLA Branch 54 in Wilmington, DE to discuss the program. I thank their president, Eugenia Nowakiwsky, for the invitation and their membership for attendance. A visit to UNWLA Branch 98/Holmdel/Middletown followed. Members of Branch 98 are very familiar with our work and are very supportive. In August 2003,1 attended the 8th World Congress of Ukrainians held in Kyiv, Ukraine. I thank UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj for including me in the UNWLA and giving me the opportunity to meet other members of the WCU. I participated in the Social Welfare session, where I was the first 106 XXVII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
