MARIYKA PAZUNIAK, MUSEUM-ART CHAIR February 6, 2005 will forever be remembered as a historic milestone in the cultural development of the Ukrainian community in the United States. On a * that day the new $9 million building housing the Ukrainian Museum was I dedicated, thereby beginning a new chapter in the museum's 27 year history. The doors of this marvelous new building were officially opened in April of this year with an exhibit of works by the world-renowned sculptor Alexander Archipenko. From its humble beginnings in 1976, the Ukrainian Museum has always counted on the support of its founder, the UNWLA. Branches, regions, and individual members of the UNWLA have contributed nearly $3.5 million dollars to the museum. UNWLA branch and regional dues were, and continue to be, a steady source of income for the museum. Indeed, the many fundraisers hosted by the UNWLA membership helped facilitate the construction of the new building. The UNWLA holds 51% of the votes on the Ukrainian Museum Board and is integrally involved in shaping policies that affect the museum. The right to participate in this decision-making comes with responsibility. The beautiful new building has 25,000 square feet of space for exhibits, offices, a library, a museum store, and a cafe. Maintaining the new facility and ensuring the success of new programs and exhibits will be challenging from the standpoint of finances and human resources. As in the past, the Ukrainian Museum will need the UNWLA's support. Membership is the sustaining base of support for any art institution, and the UNWLA can continue to support the Ukrainian Museum through membership drives and fundraisers. It is hoped that many more individual members and their families will become members of the museum. Volunteers are also an invaluable asset to any cultural institution. UNWLA volunteers have given generously of their time in the past, and it is hoped that this trend continues. In this inaugural year, the museum faces many new challenges, and volunteers can help alleviate some of the manpower needs in the new building. For the past three years, I have served as Museum-Art Chair of the UNWLA. In this capacity, I attended many museum board meetings and witnessed first-hand the arduous process of creating, constructing, and opening the new Ukrainian Museum facility. Countless hours were dedicated to making the many decisions that were necessary to complete numerous tasks, great and small, that preceded the official opening of the Ukrainian Museum. Sometimes the process seemed to move at a snail's pace; many wondered if the end would ever come. But through hard work and perseverance the construction of the building on Sixth Street was completed, and the museum opened its doors. I wish to thank all the members of the Ukrainian Museum's Executive Board and the Board of Trustees for the privilege of working with them. The resolve of the entire Board of the Ukrainian Museum to complete the work entrusted to them was unwavering. I also wish to thank the UNWLA for giving me the opportunity to work on the Ukrainian Museum Board. During the last three years, I learned firsthand about running and building an art museum—lessons that could not be learned during my years in graduate school but only through experience. Finally, I wish the new UNWLA Museum-Art Chair many fruitful and exciting years working for the UNWLA and for the Ukrainian Museum in its wonderful new space. 100 XXVII Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
