annual stipend, which they distribute to the most needy elderly women and children. As stated in reports to the Social Welfare Chair of UNWLA, the selection of the recipients is based on dire need. In 2002 and 2003, the UNWLA sent $50,003 to branches of Soyuz Ukrainok for this program. Within our limits, the UNWLA helps with the cost of medical aid to children for operations and other medical procedures. Over the last three years, $4,500 was earmarked for this purpose. In 2003, the humanitarian aid to the Lviv Regional Children’s Special Hospital was $3,557. Sister Maria Bernard, who is integrally involved with the work of the UNWLA Social Welfare program, travels to Ukraine to visit orphanages and handicapped orphans, bringing them the donations received from benefactors through the efforts of the UNWLA. In 2002 and 2004, the UNWLA presented Sister Bernard with $2,015 for this program. Other assistance for one-time needs in Ukraine from branches, individuals, and the UNWLA have amounted to $5,194. Humanitarian aid to Ukrainian youth in Bosnia-Hertzegovina (summer schools and Christmas gifts) was $4,495. The welfare activities carried out by the UNWLA depend on the voluntary work of our members and benefactors in the Ukrainian community. Our program includes projects that are geared for group participation, give the opportunity to show initiative, and teach responsibility. Members of the Committee for Social Welfare are Lidia Babiuk, honorary member of the UNWLA Olena Goy, Nadia Khomenko, and Roma Kekish. The Social Welfare Chair participated in the following: • WFUWO conference in Toronto, Canada, in October 2002 • Visits to the Donetsk region and Lviv with the UNWLA president, to bring gifts from the UNWLA. • As a delegate in the Eighth Congress of the WCU in August 2003 I would like to thank President Iryna Kurowyckyj and editor of Our Life, Irena Chaban, for their most kind cooperation. I also thank members of the Social Welfare Committee for their assistance. Particularly helpful were Lidia Babiuk, for her work with matters of the press, and Natalia Duma, the UNWLA office Administrator. I also thank Marta Baczynsky for English language translations; Marta Danyluk for her work in preparing the Social Welfare exhibit for the Eighth Congress of the WCU in Kyiv; and Lidia Zakrewsky, who helped in writing receipts. Many thanks to all.
