Nancy Barker, Mary Tomorug, Sorosh Roshan and Iryna Kurowyckyj at the ICW Meeting in Helsinki, Finland. Relations with the government of the United States December 7, 1999. Prior to the meeting in Washington D.C. between President Leonid Kuchma and Vice President Al Gore, the UNWLA had sent a letter to each, listing particular concerns about the welfare of women and children in Ukraine. January 13, 2000. Leonard Firt, National Security Advisor to Vice President Al Gore, was asked by I. Kurowyckyj if during the meeting between the Vice President and President Kuchma the economic situation of women in Ukraine had been discussed. The answer was negative. January 27, 2000. At the invitation of the State Department, I. Kurowyckyj attended a briefing about aid to Ukraine. October 26, 2000. The UNWLA was invited to attend a National Foreign Policy Conference for Leaders of Non-governmental Organizations, sponsored by the US Department of State. Numerous additional briefings were attended by Motria Slonevsky, vice president for public relations (for detailed information see report on public relations). Relations with government of Ukraine The UNWLA has an exceptionally good relationship with government representatives from Ukraine. For this we are grateful to Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Konstiantyn Gryshchenko, Ambassador Valeriy Kuchinsky (permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations) and Serhij Pohorel'tsev, Consul General of Ukraine in New York City. August 22, 1999. During the celebration of Ukraine’s independence, Consul General Jurij Bohayevsky read excerpts of congratulatory message from the UNWLA. Our members were present at the commemorative events. September 21, 1999. The UNWLA president formally greeted Borys Tarasiuk, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and other dignitaries at an event hosted at the Ukrainian Institute of America. September 23, 1990. M. Slonevsky and I. Kurowyckyj met with representatives of the Ukrainian government in Washington D.C. December 29, 1999. A farewell reception for Consul General Jurij Bohayevsky was held at the Ukrainian consulate. The UNWLA president thanked him for his cooperation with our organization during his term in this post. January 19, 2000. Motria Slonevsky attended a concert at the consulate in Washington, D.C. She frequently represents the UNWLA at similar events. February 17, 2000. The UNWLA president met the new consul general, Serhij Pohorel'tsev. February 27, 2000. The executive committee sent a greeting to the newly elected President of the Ukrainian Parliament, Ivan Plushch, and to Ukraine’s new Ambassador to the United States, Konstiantin Gryshchenko. May 19, 2000. While attending the meetings of the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council, Irena Kurowyckyj, Nadia Shmigel and other delegates of the Diaspora met with Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Borys Tarasiuk, with President Ivan Plushch, and with Minister of Education V. Krements. August 24, 2000. The president of the UNWLA and the editor of Our Life took part in an event commemorating the ninth anniversary of the independence of Ukraine.
