people, women who should never be forgotten, were also published on the pages of Our Life during the year. It was the wish of the UNWLA not merely to celebrate our 75th anniversary with events, but to create new programs and activities that would help the needy in Ukraine. One of the programs initiated in 2000 was the Milk and Roll program for the youngest schoolchildren in Ukraine. Started in the Jubilee year, the program continues to provide a nutritious breakfast for these children. It is also very popular with our members. A very special thanks is extended to members of the Detroit Region for their generous donation of $19,000 toward this program. At the present time, the UNWLA sponsored Milk and Roll program has been implemented in ten schools in various regions of Ukraine. (For detailed information, see report of social welfare chair). To the Regional Councils, Branches and all people of good will who so generously helped us with this project, I extend my sincere thank you. 2001: A Year of Joy and Sorrow The commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the independence of Ukraine brought great joy to the Ukrainian community throughout the world. Many UNWLA members celebrated the anniversary in Ukraine. During this time, I was in Kyiv, representing the UNWLA as a delegate to the Third World Forum of Ukrainians. I represented our organization. The UNWLA is an independent organization, not subject to any umbrella organizations in the United States. Although our organization is non-partisan and independent, it must have representation in various umbrella organizations to participate in certain events, one of which is the World Forum of Ukrainians. Therefore in 2000, the UNWLA became a member of the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council and participate as a voting delegate. At the Third World Forum, I also became a member of the Board of UWCC. June 18 was a sad day for our organization. With the death of long time President and Honorary President of the UNWLA, Iwanna Rozankowsky, our or ganization lost a valued friend and counselor. The Executive Committee, the National Board, and UNWLA members everywhere bid a solemn farewell to this giant of our organization. On September 11, tragedy struck the United States of America. The terrorists shocked the entire world and touched all of our lives. From the windows at UNWLA headquarters, we saw the airplane strike the second tower of the World Trade Center and we witnessed the fall of both towers. This was a horrific sight, which we will never forget. We knelt and prayed. As an orga nization based in the United States and headquartered in New York City, the UNWLA received numerous letters of sympathy from all over the world. Members of the executive board lit candles and placed flowers near St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church in Manhattan, in memory of the victims of the tragedy. We sent letters of sympathy and encouragement to Mayor Giuliani and to President Bush. We asked our members to donate money though the UNWLA to the Red Cross and to the Firemen's Fund. THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON November 13. 2001 Ms. Iryna Kurowyckyj President Ukrainian National Women's League of America, Inc. 108 Second Avenue New York, New York 10003-8355 Dear Ms. Kurowyckyj: Thank you for writing about the acts of war committed against the United States on September 11. In the face of this evil, our country remains strong and united, a beacon of freedom and opportunity to the rest of the world. Our government continues to serve the American people. Our intelligence, military, and law enforcement communities are working non-stop to find those responsible for these attacks. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who help or harbor them. We must remember that our Arab and Muslim American citizens love our Nation and must be treated with dignity and respect. Americans of every creed, ethnicity, and national origin must unite against our common enemies. Since these terrible tragedies occurred, our citizens have been generous, kind, resourceful, and brave. I encourage all Americans to find a way to help. Web sites like LibeityUnites.org can serve as a resource for those wanting to participate in the relief efforts. I deeply appreciate the support and prayers of so many Americans. May God bless you and may God bless America. 82 XXVI Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
