playgroup’s mission is to provide an opportunity to create a network allowing mothers and their children to get to know each other in the Boston community. The playgroup was held at the church and at the member’s homes as well. The fun-filled themes included a Halloween costume party for the children. The focus in 2001 was fundraising for UNWLA activities. The first event was a Pascal celebration, which raised awareness of the “Milk and Roll” program. Zoryana Mishtal, New England Regional Council President, and Halyna Shulewsky, President of Hartford Branch 106, attended this event. Zoryana was the guest speaker and discussed UNWLA’s charitable causes and the activities of the local branches in the New England area. Halyna provided a display of UNWLA literature, photo albums of recent events, and membership information. Both local parishes in the Boston community donated a total of $1,200.00 raised from the proceeds of the Pascal celebration. During the course of 2001, the Boston Branch worked with twelve other local Ukrainian organizations to celebrate the 10th anniversary of independence of Ukraine. Susanna Shpak, prepared the commemorative program book for the event, which included advertising, greetings, and in memoriam notices. Local political letters were featured along with thoughtful comments on an independent Ukraine, provided by Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. Olia Lupan, Branch Treasurer, was the secretary for the organizing committee. She hosted a reception at the home for Ukrainian Ambassador Kostyantyn Gryshchenko and his wife Natalia, and invited all the committee volunteers from the various organizations that had worked so hard throughout the year. Proceeds from the event, totaling $1,200.00 were awarded to the UNWLA Scholarship Fund. In December, the Branch continued with its own fundraiser, promoting Ukrainian art with a Hnizdov- sky art exhibit. A preview of the exhibition and a cocktail reception with Mrs. Stefania Hnizdovsky, widow of the noted artist, was held at the parish house in Boston. Guests from the Ukrainian community and Branch members enjoyed the fine display of various artworks, books, cards, etc. A video presentation highlighted the intricate and painstaking work of preparing the woodcuts. The two-day event continued with the display and sale of artwork. The names of the raffle winners were announced at the conclusion of the event.
