UNWLA BRANCH 126, BOSTON, MASS. NEW ENGLAND DISTRICT Members present at their fundraiser with Mrs. Jacques Hnizdovsky (center) in Boston. Boston Branch No 126 was the first new Branch of the millennium. Iryna Kurowyckyj officiated at the election of the new officers and was the guest speaker at the meeting. Ten women joined the Branch as new members. The year 2000 was a time to promote the Branch, establish itself, provide presence, and educate women of our existence. As president, Susanna Shpak, represented the Boston Branch at various events. In June, Susanna attended the New England Regional Picnic in Hartford, Connecticut and met women from the five local Branches in Connecticut. The day was filled with entertainment and per formances by fellow members and resulted in many new friendships. Susanna was warmly received by everyone at the picnic and won a raffle prize. In July, Susanna attended the 2000 International Convention in Boston, organized by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. As a representative of one of four Ukrainian organizations, she took part in the international gala reception dinner. The highlights of this event were the presentation of the international guest list, a procession of various national flags followed by representatives of organizations, and speeches by delegates from various parts of the world. During the Convention there was opportunity to introduce Ukrainian women’s organizations and discuss common issues, such as fundraising, with other groups. In November, Susanna attended the UNWLA’s 75,h Anniversary celebration for the New England region, which was held in Hartford, Connecticut. At the banquet, members of all six local branches participated in the festivities. Iryna Kurowyckyj attended the event, at which the achievements and contributions of the branches were recognized. Susanna received a certificate on behalf of the Boston Branch. The event featured exhibits and performances. In December Susanna attended UNWLA’s 75,h Jubilee celebration in Washington, D.C., during which she was the flag bearer during the presentation of colors. She was honored to have represented the Boston Branch as an active participant at the Jubilee celebration. During 2001, the Boston Branch more than doubled its enrollment to twenty-one members. One of the projects for the year was to establish a mother/toddler playgroup for children five years old and under. With some resourcefulness, a room in the back of the church was transformed into a playroom. Members donated toys and assisted with providing a child-friendly atmosphere.
