support of the Chornobyl Fund, Milk and Rolls Program, Press Fund, and The Ukrainian Museum. We have begun visiting the babusi in our community and are assisting with their needs. Over the years, the administration of the Ridna Shkola in Houston has been staffed primarily by Branch 118 members. Christine Puzyk and Olga Dub have had an active roll in the school since its inception. Tetyana Lytvynchuk’s teaching experience brought great improvements to the school. The school is held on the grounds of the Protection of the Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church. The volunteer hours, the work and the donations that the women from the Branch have given is enormous. In a Ukrainian community like ours, where the population is small, each individual belongs to two or three Ukrainian organizations, making free time a luxury. Each contributing Soyuz Ukrainok member deserves extra special recognition. Currently, Branch 118 has thirty-two members. The executive board consists of the following: President, Martha Noukas; Vice-President, Halya Seniw; Secretary, Eugenia Balaban; Treasurer, Vanessa Horodecky; Hospodarka, Justyna Uschak; Cultural Representative, Nadia Buchai; Correspondence Secretary (Ukrainian language) Tetyana Lytvynchuk, Correspondence Secretary (English language) Pamela Uschak; Social Welfare Representative, Halya Seniw; Scholarship Representative, Christine Bishko Villacorta; Ecology Representative, Vanessa Horodecky and Archivist, Tatiana Hirka. Regular members include: Michaelyna Balaban, Daria Byrd, Irene Bohachevsky, Christine Bryndzia, Luba Detsyk, Olga Dub, Elizabeth Goulytch, Margot Hellerman, Olia Hirka, Maria Koczman, Olga Lura, Oksana Martinez, Christine Peleschak, Danuta Peleschak, Ulana Pintchouk, Valentyna Podryhula, Christine Puzyk, Paulina Seniw, Nadija Sulyukmanov, Pamela Uschak, Juliana Villacorta and Irina Yanushevska. Branch Highlights: In 1997, Branch celebrated their twenty-fifth Anniversary with a luncheon banquet at the Barraporetti’s Restaurant. Jystyna Uschak was recognized for her pioneering efforts in establishing the Branch in Houston and was acknowledged for her many selfless contributions over the years. Ukrainian Quilt 2000. In the early part of 1999, Martha Noukas introduced the idea of having the members of Branch 118 make a quilt, using traditional Ukrainian embroidery patterns and red and black threads only. The inspiration for this idea came after Martha Noukas had visited the Houston International Quilt Show and saw the numerous works of art by individual women and women’s clubs. The quilts were priceless works of art and Martha envisioned a Ukraine Quilt that could equal the ones that she saw at the show. This idea was eagerly welcomed by the membership and the project was soon completed. In early spring of 2000, the finishing touches were added to the Ukrainian Quilt and the quilt was displayed for the first time at the 20,h Annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar. Initial intentions were to raffle the quilt, but after its completion, the members recognized the unique quality in the quilt, and now have the desire to donate the quilt to The Ukrainian Museum in New York. The quilt will be presented at the UNWLA Convention in May 2002. Branch 118 celebrated the 75lh Anniversary of UNWLA in December 2000, by holding a banquet dinner at the Achilles Restaurant in Houston. Past branch president, Olga Lura, spoke on the past history of the branch and recognized both Martha Noukas and Daria Byrd for their twenty-five years of service to UNWLA. Past president, Tetiana Hirka, gave a very insightful speech on the history of UNWLA. This anniversary banquet was combined with an end of the year Christmas party. Martha Noukas presented special - made plaques to the executive board members and outstanding contributors for their service to the organization in the 75th year of UNWLA’s history. Membership with Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs (TFWC). In an effort to share our culture with other women’s clubs in the community, Martha Noukas contacted the City Federation of Women’s Clubs and met with President, Fadine Roquemore and TFWC District President, Ramona Nance, to coordinate membership. In September 2001, Branch 118 was accepted into the TFWC. We look forward to meeting and sharing ideas with our fellow volunteering women in the state of Texas. Contacts abroad. Additionally, through the efforts of Branch 118 Secretary, Tetyana Lytvynchuk, we are establishing contacts with our Ukrainian sisters abroad. During the summer of 2001, Tetyana Lytvynchuk traveled to Ukraine and visited with the Assistant Director, Tanya Bilyk, of Middle School #151 XXVI Конвенція СУА 321 www.unwla.org
