In the early years, when members numbered at just a dozen, the women gathered at homes, held meetings, and discussed ways to promote Ukrainian culture, ways to provide an Ukrainian education for the young and ways to raise funds. In the 1980s, Branch 118 began sponsoring the annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar to share Easter traditions, culture and art with the Houston community. Each Bazaar provided delicious food, pastries and breads for everyone to enjoy. Cultural displays, craft tables, art and pysanky demonstrations were always a part of the event. The bazaar is held every Palm Sunday in the Parish Hall of the Protection of the Mother of God (Pokrova) Ukrainian Catholic Church in Houston. In 2001, Branch 118 sponsored their 21s' Annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar! Over the years Branch 118 has participated in non-Ukrainian festivals, such as the annual Sts. Cyril & Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, the Houston International Festival, the Katy Rice Harvest Festival and the Autumn Masquerade. With each passing year, improvements were made to the Bazaar, and the proceeds enabled the Branch to contribute more toward social welfare programs and student scholarships. Branch 118 now sponsors three students. Medical and financial assistance has been provided to Ukrainians here and abroad. Money and clothing were collected for the Zakarpattia Relief Fund and money was sent in 320 XXVI Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
